Udupi, Sep 7: As part of the upcoming nativity feast, flower arrangement competition was held at St Mary's English Medium School, Kannarpady on Friday, September 6.
The competition brought out creativity and skills in children. Around 400 students enthusiastically participated in the competition.
The flower show was held in two categories, garden flowers and market flowers.
Some students brought flowers from their gardens, while others purchased the flowers from the market. Students used fresh garden flowers such as arum lily, white ginger lily, China rose, sunflower, jungle geranium, zinnia, roses, cosmos, buttercup, asters, crocus, gladiolus, golden trumpet and decorative leaves. Some of the contestants used papaya shell as base for the bouquet, while others decorated the flowers with pearls.
The competition was judged on the basis of idea, theme, creativity and presentation. It was a visual treat to see the beauty of the colourful flowers.
Reeta Quadres, vice principal of the school said, “We have been conducting this competition since 30 years to encourage children. Moreover, nativity festival is just round the corner. The competition was organised to make them understand the beauty of nature. Students here are skilled in floral arrangement. We are happy that parents are encouraging their children to take part in this competition."
Adlene D’souza, a student said, “this is a much awaited competition. It has become like a tradition in our school. It helps us develop aesthetics as well learn about different flowers in our surroundings."
