Modi addresses nation after Moon mission setback

Bengaluru, Sep 7 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed the scientists of ISRO calling them "exceptional professionals" whom the nation and the world at large stands by. He said every person was aware of the amount of disappointment they were feeling following the Vikram lander setback.

He once again reiterated the pride the nation felt at Indian Space Research Organisation's ambitious attempt to make the Chandrayaan-2 mission a success.

Following the Rs 978 crore-rupees Chandrayaan-2 mission's apparent temporary setback with the Vikram lander losing communication minutes before touching down on the lunar surface, Modi said: "I could read your disappointment when you lost signal with the lander."

"Every Indian is thrilled with the spirit of pride and confidence. We are proud of our space progamme and scientists, their hard work and determination," he said.

Modi, who was present at the ISTRAC here in the early hours of Saturday, interacted with the ISRO scientists after the mood in the control room became all gloomy as soon as signals stopped arriving from Vikram.

Patting ISRO Chairman K. Sivan's back, the Prime Minister said: "Whatever you all have done today is no mean feat. I am with you. Be courageous."

Communication with moon lander Vikram was lost as it was descending towards the Moon earlier in the day. The link was lost as the lander was at an altitude of 2.1 km over the moon's South Pole where it was due to land, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan said.

Suresh ,I understand the panic. But people dont stop watching movies and going to restaurants even with grim financial situation. But space missions of ISRO have changed our lives. Our communication, defense, weather forecast are part of it.ISRO has given us more than what they have lost.My only opinion is that the hype could have been moderated. What ISRO has achieved is great.Repect!

This type of failure is not unusual. If the history of space missions are traced, failures have been registered for many nations. This moon mission setback is just a aspect of success stories to follow...

    Disappointed
Rs.10000 core is nothin, that’s less than how much the politicians loot the public in less than a year. If someone is brave enough to recover all that money from them or when we have honest people ruling the country, India will prosper.

have you ever talk about looting of our nation from last 70 years by our politician in the corruption. if you calculate that then it could be crores of crores. do you know how the car industry helped you. there also some R&D work is there & some time it could failed. like that here in space research also failure are there. however these research will help many thing. so without knowing the facts don't blame it with the limited knowledge of your car manufacturing co. only your car manufacturing company wont help this nation, it require everything. please be cool & think.

Politicians should give importance to those who live on earth and their livelihood and not those planets who are Gods creation not for living. I understand your pain Mr. Shetty.
