'India's moon mission, wake-up call for Pakistan'

Islamabad, Sep 8 (IANS): Eminent Pakistani scientist and former minister for science and technology Atta-ur-Rehman has said that Indias moon mission was a wake-up call for Pakistan, which requires to follow suit.

Speaking to a Pakistan TV channel here, Rehman said, "The Indian moon mission cannot be termed a failure, as such tests by even big and technologically advanced countries also fail. He said failures and successes are part of such missions but those who stick to them succeed at last."

"Half of such missions undertaken by even the most advanced and developed countries have failed and only half succeeded," Rehman added.

Rehman said the impression that such missions involve a lot of money is not the right approach, as such endeavours also have their impact on defence and industries.

"India is doing the right job and we should follow it to reach the Moon and the Mars," said Rahman.

Rehman went on to say that the attempt to reach the Moon should not be driven by ego, to be on an equal footing with India, but pursuing such missions will improve many technologies which will strengthen Pakistan's defence and industries.

Pakistanis would always like to compare themselves with India in each and every conceivable way, however there is little or no comparison between the two countries.

After independence India took the hard route of manufacturing with foreign collaboration, and then taking a foreign made product and making it more robust and in tune with the India's requirement and market needs. It was a big uphill battle to go from an agricultural based society to build a strong industrial based society and today almost everything is made in India or assembled in India.

Whereas Pakistan took the short cut and began importing each and every thing. There were flush with 5000 crore of Gold being the share of assets from the union of British India. That's why just about a dozen "Jagirdar" families in Pakistan control over 70% of its wealth, the remaining is controlled by the Politicians and the army. Eventually they could go into space but Pakistan needs to first build an industrial base.
