Mangaluru: Margaret Alva to address students at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru, Sep 9: The department of Political Science, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) will be organizing a programme titled ‘An Interface on the Remiminscences of a Political Journey’ on September 11 at 3 pm at LCRI Hall. The programme aims at helping the young men and women to learn from the experiences of a great woman parliamentarian, Margaret Alva, former Governor of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat.

Fr Dionysius Vaz, SJ, will preside over the programme. Fr Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, principal will be present for the programme.

The college will honour Margaret Alva on for her contributions to the political society.

About Margaret Alva

Born into a middle class family of Mangaluru in 1942, Margaret Alva traversed a long journey from this coastal town to be an illustriuous personality.

A distinguished parliamentarian, Margaret Alva has, during her 30 years in the Indian Parliament, served on some of Parliament’s most prestigious committees viz., the Committee on Public Undertakings (COPU), the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs, Tourism and Transport, Science & Technology and Environment & Forests, and all the four major Committees that involved women’s right viz., the Dowry Prohibition Act (Amendment) Committee, the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Committee, Equal Remuneration Review Committee and the 84th Constitution Amendment Bill Joint Select Committee for 33% reservation for women in local bodies. She served as chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women from 1999-2004.

She is founder president of ‘Karuna’, a non-governmental organisation working for women and children with presence in 6 states which specialises in empowering women at the grassroots politically and economically. She is also Patron of ‘Tamanna’, an organization for the rehabilitation of mentally challenged children and served as President of the Delhi Foundation of Deaf Women during 1975-82.
