NCP MLA loses cool in Meghalaya Assembly

Shillong, Sep 9 (IANS): The Meghalaya assembly on Monday saw lone Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator, Saleng Sangma, using slangs and venting his anger over the non-functional microphones inside the House.

Sangma, who is also the Chairman of Meghalaya assembly's privileges and ethics committee banged the table and used slangs after Deputy Speaker Timothy Shira disallowed lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator, Adelbert Nongrum to raise supplementary question on issues related to inter-state boundary dispute.

Nongrum was pleading with the Deputy Speaker to allow him to raise the supplementary question. But Shira said did not notice him because the microphone was not working.

"It was not my fault for not hearing you because the microphone was not function," Shira said while disallowing Nongrum on the ground that he has moved to another question, and called the minister concerned to reply.

The lone KHNAM legislator too argued that it was not his fault and pleaded with the deputy speaker to allow him to raise supplementary question on the important issue.

As the Deputy Speaker did not allow Nongrum to raise his supplementary question, Sangma stood up and raised his voice in anger over the non-functional sound system.

The Deputy Speaker did not intervene nor did he call for expunging the words and instead allowed Nongrum to raise his supplementary question.
