Air India Express B738 at Sharjah Rejected Takeoff

Simon Hradecky / The Aviation Herald

Sharjah, Jul 7: An Air India Express Boeing 737-800, flight IX-536 from Sharjah, U A E to Thiruvananthapuram (India) with 172 passengers and 6 crew, rejected takeoff from Sharjah at high speed due to severe vibrations, on tuesday, July 7.

The airplane stopped safely on the runway, emergency services responded.

The runway had to be closed "for a short time", airport officials reported. The airplane was towed to the apron. The vibrations were caused by a burst tyre.

Khaleej Times Adds:

A tyre of a Boeing 737-800 Air India Express flight to South Indian destination of Trivandrum burst just before takeoff from Sharjah International Airport at 12.10pm on Tuesday, sending 172 passengers onboard into panic. The pilot aborted the takeoff. None was injured but the runway had to be closed for two hours.

The passengers were made to disembark by Sharjah Civil Defence, police and flight attendants. They were taken to the terminus building and allowed to rest in the airport lounge.

Mohini Singh, an Air India official, said they arranged another flight from India and the stranded passengers were flown to Trivandrum around 9.20pm.

The airport’s emergency team responded quickly as per the emergency plan and crisis management
 guidelines.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Shaikh Khalid bin Issam Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Civil Aviation, said the Civil Defence declared an emergency situation and closed the runway to ensure the safety of the other flights.

The official said the airport is well-prepared and equipped to face such incidents and that the staff are trained to act swiftly to handle any emergency.

The aircraft was moved from the runway to allow smooth movement of other flights. The official said the situation has returned to normal.

Yousif Al Serkal, Director-General of Civil Defence, said that the firefighting unit at the airport responded immediately and four fire engines as well as recue teams and ambulances surrounded the flight.

Panic and relief were writ large on the faces of passengers as they disembarked. Santosh, Karia, a passenger, told Khaleej Times that the incident happened two seconds before the plane was to take off.

“The plane was moving at high speed and suddenly all passengers felt a jerky movement. We panicked and children and women screamed. There was a sudden break and the flight stopped. We were told by the crew to remain calm for 45 minutes and then we were asked to leave the flight and go back to the
airport,” he said.

In May this year, a Russian cargo flight had to make emergency landing at the airport due to a technical snag. In October last year too, a Russian cargo flight developed a technical fault and made emergency landing at the airport.

I truly dont agree with mr Prakash d''souza''s view and the others who support his views abt the incident....air india is one of the most safest aircarriers in the world compared to the others....one of the finest pilots and crew who deliver prompt performance..bursting of tyres is not a maintenace and technical negligence....it is just an accident that could happen to any aircraft ,any airline, anywhere so commenting abt the condition and maintenance is just a thought of an ignorant mind...FYI the aircrafts that air india express has are just abt 3 years old compared to the others they can be called brand new...so think again...try supporting ur country next time.....

We should actually thank and praise the pilots of the aircraft who averted the mishap rather than blaming the maintainance of air india. Do you people know that air india flight was never involved in any major crash till now? I watch a program in national geographic channel called air crash investigation in which they re-create the crash and investigate.

Till now I have seen only one Air India crash but that was because of mid-air bomb blast in 1990s. but have seen dozens of american airline flights, british airways and air france including the recent ones. Indian pilots are very intelligent when it comes to safety and they are in demand all over the world( im assuming that the pilots of this flight were also Indians). so we should be proud of them actually..i know the maintainance is not good but it can be considered one of the safest flight. I will surely choose Air India if they provide direct flight to sydney.

Accidents happen, without knowing the right reason blaming is not right. we all have our own imagination''s.Though I am not a fan of Air India Express I travel in it just because of it''s low cost.My wife and me even had a bad experience in Bombay where the pilot went away from the plane leaving the passenger''s in the plane for 4 to 5 hour''s,Then we were taken to a hotel, and we could travel only in the night.

Govt jobs are taken when people want to take some rest.Let''s not disturb them, anyway no accident happened god protect us alway''s, only we should have faith in him.

It is not good news for Air India, which si already in turbulant weather with losses in crores..!! Poor maintenance and negligence of employees towards duty is clear indication of this lapse. Thank God for His Small Mercies, so many lives saved..!!

Will Air India wake up n work towards betterment of airline & it''s passengers. It is high time Govt takes drastic steps N MEASURES against such employees who show lethargic attitude towards duty. It is always said, it is tough to get a Govt job, but it is tougher even to loose it once you have got it..!! salary and Perks are guaranteed to them, even if they work or dont?? Hope Mr. Praful Patel is taking serious measures to curb further losses to AI, coz our tax money is being misused..!!

My God ... it is a miracle ! May be some one on board the plane is spiritually close to God. Hence, God has saved rest of the passengers from a disaster. Take off and landing are of the main risks of the plane. Thank God for saving all passengers.

Why this kind of incidents happens more with air india.Air india staff has to realise the technical necessities before the take - off. They need to learn a lot from Kuwait airways regarding the time punctuality and customer care specially lugggage of passengers. Because two times I got my luggage after a delay of 1 or two days after my reaching to kuwait. Our Air India has to learn a lot from foreign flights.

Maybe due to cost reduction quality is getting compromized. With all the recent strikes it is quite possible that negligence was a part. Air India needs to operate like a company and somehow like Shoukath many have this opinion about Air India.
