Kuwait, Jul 12: With the temperature at 47degrees Centigrade, kids away from school and most of our family & friends away on summer vacation, the Office bearers and Committee members of the Agnesian Alumnae Kuwait came up with an interesting activity that would be educative and yet fun-filled.
The Agnesian Alumnae Kuwait (AAK) has gained fame over the past four years through it’s socio-cultural events as well as a Throwball tournament for women last year. With the aim of educating deserving women as well as bringing out the talent of its members, the AAK has always strived to come up with innovative activities that are in line with its mission.
On Saturday, July 11, 2009, the AAK organized its first Handicraft session for its members as well as close family and friends- “Creation and Recreation with Crochet”. The Royal Terrace Restaurant was the venue that accommodated a small group of 30 enthusiastic women, each holding a Crochet hook and two contract coloured yarns.
Kavitha Colaco, an Ex-Agnesian hailing from Mangalore was all set to present this session of fun and learning. Besides being a very good singer, Kavitha has a special passion towards handicrafts and crochet is her favourite among them. Crochet has been her childhood hobby and she has pursued it over the years. While expecting her 1st child last year she has made several baby sweater, mittens, caps, booties to added to her previous collection on table center pieces, small purses etc. An enthusiastic Kavitha prepared well, despite her hectic professional and domestic schedule, to share her knowledge of crochet to the participating women of the session.
The session commenced at 9:45am with a prayer in the true tradition of St. Agnes College. A warm welcome was extended to all the participants by the President of AAK-Reema D’Souza. The three hour session included a powerpoint presentation on the origin of Crochet, materials used, common abbreviations and terminology of Crochet. This was followed by a session of learning the basic stitches of crochet. Each stitch was demonstrated by Kavitha and a live video covering the demonstration enabled the participants to see and understand the tact of crochet better. Each participant was asked to work on the task that was taught. The technique of joining yarns and seaming was also demonstrated and explained. Though the group comprised of a mix of absolute freshers and those who had some idea of crochet, it was interesting to watch the participants sharing knowledge and learning with enthusiasm.
In today’s world “GOOGLE” has the answer to almost all our queries. But the first hand guidance to read instructions on how to make a particular item, be it through the websites or books, was explained by Kavitha and it was much appreciated by the participants as this would enable them to work on items independently.
The information and practical session of three hours came to an end with participants exhausted yet delighted by the knowledge that was gained. The participants dispersed after savoring on some light snacks.
Each partcipant was given a hand-out of the presentation for future reference
