High drama in Mathura as man sets car ablaze, fires in air

Mathura, Sep 26 (IANS): The streets of Mathura witnessed a high drama when a man set his car ablaze and fired gunshots in the air, creating panic in the area and bringing traffic to a standstill. Even policemen were seen taking shelter behind parked cars.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening.

"The man has been identified as Shubham Chaudhary from Mathura who reached the spot on Wednesday evening. He was accompanied by a woman who too had an illegal weapon with her. He set his own car on fire and when attempts were made to control him, he fired in the air and kept on addressing people on a public address system," Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur said.

While using the public address system, the man was ranting about corruption. He was accompanied by a woman and children who sat on the road when the incident was taking place. The woman was also seen brandishing firearms.

It took a considerable time before the man and the woman could be overpowered and arrested. Their weapons were seized.

According to the SSP, "The exact reason for all this is being investigated because conflicting statements are coming from him. Sometimes, he claims the woman with him is his wife and at other times he calls his sister. Then, he changes his version by calling her his business partner."

Chaudhary is a resident of the Refinery police station area. "We are also probing from where he has procured the weapons. The woman also had a weapon. All these questions will be answered only after proper investigation. At this stage we can't confirm whether the woman was his wife or sister," said the SSP.

Sources said that the man's wedding scheduled to be held in November had been called off due to his relationship with the woman. He was under depression and was being treated for the same.
