Congress 'padyatra' in support of Shahjahanpur victim

Lucknow, Sep 30 (IANS): Congress party workers in Uttar Pradesh will take out a 'padyatra' on Monday to show solidarity and seek justice for the Shahjahanpur victim.

The 'padyatra' will start from Shahjahanpur and conclude in Lucknow, covering a distance of about 180 kms.

"The girl is paying the price of raising her voice against a powerful BJP leader. While the former Minister is passing his days in an AC room of a medical institution, the girl is in jail. She needs support and we are with her," said Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu.

"The Yogi Adityanath government is going all out to save the accused former Union Minister Chinmayanand. We demand the immediate release of the girl and registering a case of rape against the accused."

All former MPs, MLAs, senior Congress leaders and party workers have been directed to participate in the padyatra.

During the march, Congress workers and leaders will raise the issues concerning women's security. The participants will walk around 20 km a day.

The Congress is also demanding security for the aggrieved family and a fast-track hearing of the case.

Earlier, newly appointed national spokesperson Supriya Srinetra had said that the BJP government had deliberately diluted the case against Chinmayanand.
