54 in fray for four Punjab Assembly by-elections


Chandigarh, Sep 30 (IANS): As many as 48 candidates filed nomination papers on the last day on Monday for the October 21 bypolls to four Punjab Assembly seats -- Phagwara, Mukerian, Dakha and Jalalabad, taking the total number in the fray to 54.

For the Phagwara and Dhaka seats, 16 candidates each have filed their papers, while 11 candidates each have done so for Mukerian and Jalalabad, an official statement said.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on October 1, while October 3 is last day to withdraw.

Counting of ballots will be held on October 24.
