Congress slams Nitish government over floods

New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday slammed the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government of Bihar for "mishandling" the flood situation in the state, alleging that such a situation had arisen as "no work" had been done in the last 15 years to ensure a clear drainage system.

The Congress in-charge of Bihar, Shakti Singh Gohil, while addressing a press conference here, alleged that corruption was the reason for the situation that Bihar finds itself in.

"The land meant for drainage and other public convenience has been encroached upon by people connected to the ruling party," he alleged.

"The government, which showed the dream of Patna as a smart city, is itself involved in corruption as the money allotted for the 'Namami Gange' programme for the treatment of drains has been misused," Gohil said.

The recent floods have resulted in the death of 27 people besides throwing normal life out of gear.

Patna is witnessing the worst flood situation in decades and even the residences of ministers have been flooded, as has been seen in the case of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi who had to be rescued from his home.
