Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 2: The alumnae of St Agnes College organized a social activity as part of their endeavour to reach out to the less privileged. They visited the Snehalaya Rehabilitation Centre, near Manjeshwar, a 45-minute drive from the city. The alumnae donated rice, sugar, pulses coffee and tea powder which were handed over to the administration of Snehalaya.

Recently, 15 alumnae gathered at St Agnes College and set out to their destination in three cars. On reaching there, the management and the administration welcomed them warmly. The alumnae were first given a guided tour of the women’s wing where there are 35 inmates and they interacted with the inmates by listening to them about their families and comforting them.

They then gathered at the activity room, where they were welcomed them and a small prayer, a hymn and some games were conducted. The alumnae asked some of the inmates to sing to showcase their talents. The winners of the games and the best singers were awarded prizes.

Thereafter, the alumnae visited the men’s wing where there are 235 inmates at various stages of rehabilitation. They gathered at the activity hall where they were welcomed, said a small prayer followed by a hymn. Everyone was eager to participate in the games that were organized for them and the winners were given prizes. Many of them came forward to exhibit their talent in singing and all those who sang well were given prizes.

After the programme, the alumnae visited the retired, old and sick men on different floors and engaged them in small talks enquiring about their families and their hometown. They then went to another ward where there were men under intense rehabilitation and spent time talking to them.

It was a fruitful experience for all of the alumnae to meet the less privileged people who are brought together in one home to live together as one family. The alumnae were happy for the opportunity to reach out to the inmates and share in their pain and suffering.
