Pilot project launched to solve Ghazipur garbage mess

New Delhi, Oct 3 (IANS): Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir inaugurated a ballistic segregator on Thursday as part of a pilot project to reduce the size and ultimately clear the infamous Ghazipur landfill.

This segregation system has been put in place to segregate waste and dispose it off in a more scientific way, said Gambhir's office.

At the inauguration, Gambhir said, "This is just the beginning and I will not stop until this landfill is completely clear. The time to talk is over and we must act now."

Gambhir had earlier formulated a strategy with municipal commissioners of other clean cities like Indore.

Ghazipur landfill is Asia's biggest garbage mountain, that falls under Gambhir's parliamentary constituency of East Delhi. Locals have been demanding it's removal for years.

On September 1, 2017, a portion of the landfill slid 110 meters across an area adjacent to the landfill. It slid to the Hindon Canal. As a result of this incident, two people died and five were injured.
