Canada, Jul 27: Darren, son of Ronald and Fabiola Fernandes (both from Mangalore) spent his early childhood in Sharjah. He attended Our Own English High School and the Emirates National School till grade 4. At the age of 10, he moved to Canada with his parents.
He was recently in the news, after becoming the leading scholar from a Brampton school with an average of 99.17% in his top six Grade 12 courses. He scored 100% each in chemistry, data management, calculus and advanced functions, 98% in physics and 97% in religion. He narrowly missed the top slot, as a Mississauga student scored one mark more than him and topped the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in Ontario that serves about 88,000 students from Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville.
From a very young age, Darren's appetite for knowledge has been huge. He spends time reading books and watching documentaries on varied subjects. He loves music, plays the piano and hopes to pass RCM examination (Book 6) in August this year. Playing X-box with friends is one of his favourite pastimes. He is a member of the Squires (junior division of the Knights of Columbus) since 2005, and was elected as the Deputy Chief Squire for the year 2008-09. He also participated in the after-school credit recovery programme, in which he helped tutor students in mathematics and science.
Darren has accepted an entrance scholarship to McMaster University, where he has enrolled himself in the Integrated Sciences programme.
