Murray to make grand slam return at Australian Open 2020

Sydney, Oct 8 (IANS): Former World No. 1 Andy Murray will be making his grand slam return at next year's Australian Open set to be held in January.

The official Twitter handle of the Australian Open confirmed the news on Tuesday. "Confirmed: Andy Murray will return to compete at the Australian Open in 2020," read the tweet.

The 2019 Australian Open appeared to be his last as he had revealed his retirement plans due to a troublesome hip problem.

However, he underwent hip resurfacing surgery following the grand slam on January 28. After that, he has returned to the ATP Tour following a comeback via doubles and the Challenger Tour.

After that, he paired up with Serena Williams at the Wimbledon for the mixed doubles event and then participated with his brother Jamie in the men's doubles event at the Washington Open.

The 32-year-old, however, did not participate in the US Open in August. Last week, he reached the quarterfinals of the China Open where he lost to Dominic Thiem in Beijing.

The Australian Open will be played between January 20 to February 2 in Melbourne.
