Udupi, Oct 19: Annual Sports Meet 2019-20 of Milagres English Medium School was inaugurated at Milagres Degree College Grounds with great pomp and enthusiasm on Friday, October 18.
The guests of the day were warmly welcomed by the school band. Fr Dr Lawrence C D’Souza, correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions along with the chief guest witnessed and took the guard of honour from over thousand students of the school dressed in varied attires. Chief guest Shalini Shetty, national level badminton player from Udupi, PTA vice presidents’ Rekha Shetty and Swati Nayak, Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ, principal of Milagres English Medium Schools, Veera D’Silva headmistress of Milagres Primary School, Neri Cornelio and Owen, member of management committee were present.
The chief guest was stunned by the disciplined march-past of students. After the grand march past, the sports torch was brought by athletes who have represented the school at district, state level events. They handed it over to Shalini Shetty who lit the torch and declared the Sports Meet 2019-20 open.
The two-day Sports Meet was formally inaugurated by letting out colourful balloons in the air by the chief guest. In her address, she said that her life too has been painful throughout because she had to shift from one sport to another because of injury and difficulties. Yet she did not give up. Even at the age of 45 she stills continues because she loves sports to the maximum. She said that she was very happy to come to Milagres English Medium School that has kept up its standard for over four decades and stood tall among the best institutions of Udupi. She said that participation is worth a try than winning prizes because it adds to physical health dimension of education.
Fr Dr. Lawrence D’Souza in his presidential address appreciated the students and wished them well in the process of holistic education which includes academics, sports and cultural dimensions. Fr Lancy Fernandes SJ, welcomed the gathering. Veera D' Silva rendered the vote of thanks. Prizes for march-past were distributed. Prashanth and Savina Almeida compered the programme.
