Bantwal: Dasappa Rai, Janaki Brahmavar bag Tulunadu Tulushree Awards

Bantwal, Aug 5: Aladapadav Akshara Foundation director Dr Durgaprasad M R and convener A Gopal Anchan announced that Yakshagana artiste K H Dasappa Rai (2008) and Tulu littérateur Janaki Brahmavar (2009) have been chosen to receive the Tulunadu Tulushree Awards, for the year 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Akshara Foundation, Aladapadav, near here, has been conferring the annual Tulunadu Tulushree Awards, since the year 2004, in recognition of the significant contributions by veterans to Yakshagana and Tulu literary fields. Accordingly, both K H Dasappa Rai and Janaki Brahmavar have qualified for the award, considering their contributions to these fields.
K H Dasappa Rai:
Rai is a native of Bappalige village in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, developed interest in Yakshagana since his childhood. Since then, he served as a Yakshagana artiste with Karnataka and Sri Kadri temple Yakshagana troupes, for the past 42 years. He has successfully donned roles in both Tulu and Kannada Yakshagana episodes. He had organized several Tulu programmes, during his tenure as the president of Puttur Tulu Koota. He has bagged several awards including the district Rajyotsav Award and from the Tulu organizations in the Gulf countries.
Janaki Brahmavar:
M Janaki Brahmavar is a native of Mudutonse – Murukudru, in Udupi district. She is conversant with Kannada, Tulu and English languages. Kambala(collection of poems in Kannada) Kuduruda Kedage, Yuga Magarnaga and Kappu Gidi, Tirugatada Tirulu (travelogue in Kannada) are her wirjs that have already been published. Her Tulu novel, 'Kuduruda Kedage', has been translated into English by Siddalinga Pattana Shetty. This novel has also been transformed into a Tulu play with the title, 'Court Martial'. Janaki is a member of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy. She has bagged several awards from the undivided Dakshina Kannada district Sahitya Sangam and other organizations, including Paniyadi Tulu Kadambari Award.
Tulunadu Tulushree awards will be conferred on Dasappa Rai and Janaki, at Punjalkatte, on Saturday August 8, during the concluding ceremony of Tulunadu level Aatidonji Koota, a Tulu cultural festival, informed Dr Durgaprasad M R and Gopal Anchan.
