Udupi, Aug 7:
‘Upakarma’, the annual Vedic rite of changing the sacred thread, was held in Sri Kalikamba temples at Katpady and Kaup by members of the Vishwakarma community on Thursday August 6.

Upakarma signifies close proximity to the divine and the commencement of Vedic studies.  It is during Upakarma that teenage boys of the community are deemed eligible to take part in various Vedic rites.

A priest conducts the ceremony and the young boys don the sacred thread. Every year, this sacred thread is replaced during the annual Upakarma ceremony.

Hundreds of community boys took part in the Upakarma rites held in various temples across the coastal district on Thursday.
