NRI Becomes India's Fourth Swine Flu Victim

Ahmedabad, Aug 9 (IANS): A 43-year-old NRI, who arrived in this Gujarat city from the US last month, succumbed to Influenza A (H1NI) early Sunday, becoming India's fourth swine flu victim, a minister said.

Pravin Patel, who flew in with his wife from Atlanta July 31, died at the civil hospital here.

"It is sad but...the NRI, who came from Atlanta, has died of swine flu. This is the first swine flu death in Ahmedabad. The patient had earlier complications as well - he had viral pneumonia, which is very difficult to treat, his haemoglobin was low. All these outer problems added to the complications of swine flu and he passed away," Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas told IANS.

The couple had tested positive for swine flu Saturday.

Early Sunday morning, 42-year-old Sanjay Kokare died of swine flu in Pune's Sassoon Hospital, the third victim of the virus in Maharashtra.

On Saturday evening, a 53-year old woman, Fahmida Paanwala, succumbed to swine flu complications in Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital. On Aug 3, a 14-year old girl, Reeda Shaikh, became the country's first casualty of swine flu in Pune.
