Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical College organizes 'Undergraduate Surgery Quiz 2019'

Mangaluru, Oct 30: The department of General Surgery, Father Muller Medical College, organized an 'Undergraduate Surgery Quiz 2019' for MBBS students on October 26 at the hospital Conference Hall.

Students from ten medical colleges from all over Karnataka consisting of 49 teams participated in the quiz.

The half-day's programme began with the inaugural function by invoking the blessings from the Almighty by the undergraduate students followed by lamp lighting by the dignitaries on the dais.



The welcome address was delivered by Dr Leo Francis Tauro, professor and head of the department of General Surgery.

Dr Sriram Bhat, professor and HOD, department of General Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, here was the chief guest of the function. In his inaugural address he stressed on the importance of quizzing. He said that quizzing will help in improving the brain’s reflexes, but may not help much in examinations, although it will help them assess knowledge of the subject. "Father Muller Hospital is a well-known hospital from his childhood days catering to the needs of entire south Canara and neighboring districts.

Dr Jayaprakash Alva, dean, Father Muller Medical College, here addressed the gathering by congratulating the participants and the faculty members of the department for taking on the initiative in organizing the quiz every year. He expressed his satisfaction that the quiz was gaining popularity over the years as seen by the increase in number of participating colleges from all over Karnataka. He suggested to take the quiz to national level in the subsequent years.

The function was presided over by Fr Richard Coelho, director, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru. In his presidential address expressed his sincere thanks to the chief guest for recognizing the contribution of Father Muller’s in community service and education over the years. He congratulated the department for organizing the event and wished all the participants good luck.

Dr Chirag Pereira, assistant professor was the quiz master, assisted by Dr Manohar Martis and Dr Varun Khullar.

The quiz consisted of a preliminary selection round followed by a final quiz with the top five teams. The final quiz consisted of five rounds which included MCQ round, Q & A round, Pictionary round, guess the surgeon and rapid fire rounds.

Suhas and Mali Abhishek from Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru won the first prize, the second prize was won by Priya and Hussain from Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, and the third prize by Spoorthi and Likhith from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bengaluru.

The prizes were distributed by HOD and other senior professors in the department of General Surgery.

Dr John Joseph S Martis, professor and unit head rendered the vote of thanks.

The programme was compered by Dr Supriya Pinto, final year postgraduate student.

Overall the programme was a grand success and well appreciated by the participants.

The cash prize was sponsored by the Father Muller Charitable Institutions management. In addition to it, the first and second prize winners were presented books authored by Dr Rajgopal Shenoy, prof and associate dean, KMC Manipal, while the third prize winners, were presented books authored by Dr Sri Ram Bhat, Prof and HOD, KMC, Mangaluru.
