Update at 2.35pm, IST, Aug 12, 2009

After an operation by the fire brigade that took nearly three hours, the chief fire officer, H S Varadarajan, declared that the  fire dousing operation has been successfully  concluded and that the fire personnel have been checking out all the floors in the building.

He claimed that the operation was rendered very difficult, because of the fact that fire fighting equipments not put in place in this multistoried building, in violation of the code for construction of buildings.

If the fire equipments along with the hydrants had been kept in place as required, the firemen could have dosed fire a little bit earlier, he added.

The officer also added that, more than 70 persons were brought out from the upper floors of the building located above the fire-affected floor, where as four firemen of the department of fire services have been injured.

More than 15 persons were admitted to hospitals in the city for treatment, because of the breathing problems experienced due to the inhalation of the toxic smoke.

After the fire was almost extinguished, the people who were stuck in the upper floors of the building were evacuated with the help of  the fire personnel.

The grim situation witnessed at the beginning, after smoke started billowing from the fourth floor, made some of the people to decide to jump outside, but because of the advice given by the fire personnel, they stayed on. They had been warned to stay where they were, and were assured of their safety. Almost all the people who were in the upper floors waited patiently, as a result of which no grave injuries occurred.

The chief fire officer said that eight tankers of water was used by the fire department to douse the fire, where as two more tankers had arrived from MCF and MRPL for the operation.

He stated, that he was informed at the time of registering the fire report, that short circuit had caused the fire. However, the exact cause of the fire would be known only after a thorough check, he added.

Update at 1.35 pm

People being Evacuated: Operation in Concluding Stages

The firemen have now started evacuating the people, who had been stranded in the upper stories of the building. Those who show symptoms of smoke inhalation, are being hospitalized. No major injuries or casualties have been reported so far.

Two more firemen were injured in the operation since last report. The dousing operation is in final stages and the firemen are expected to conclude their task soon.

Update at 1.10 pm

One fireman injured: MCF/MRPL Fire Fighters arrive

The three rescued men have been admitted to a hospital, as they showed symptoms of suffocation due to inhalation of smoke. One of the firemen was injured while taking part in the dousing operations.

Fire fighting equipments from Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers and Mangalore Refinery and Petro Chemicals Ltd have arrived to support the fire-fighting operations. The operations have gained momentum with the arrival of additional, powerful equipments.

Update at 12.50 pm

Three Rescued from Fourth Floor

There are a total of six shops/offices located above the fourth floor of the building. Three persons, who were on the fourth floor, have since been rescuede. None of them have been injured.

Two of the upper floors are occupied by the office of the commisioner of central excise, while offices of Kotak Securities and Pyramid Breakers are also located there.

Hundreds of onlookers, people close to the ones stuck in the building etc., have gathered on the scene of the incident. Thick smoke has engulfed the building.

Mangalore, Aug 12: Fire was detected in the fourth floor of 'Trade Centre' building located near Jyothi Circle on Bunts Hostel Road in the city, at around noon on Wednesday August 12. Fire tenders have been pressed into service and the situation appears to be grim.

The building has seven floors, and the fire was noticed in an electrical goods godown located on the fourth floor. While people from lower floors have been evicted, over 200 people are believed to have been stuck in the upper floors. People are making frantic efforts to climb down to safety, and the fire brigade personnel have been doing everything in their command to ensure that there are no casualties. So far, no casualties have been reported.

The firemen have so far been able in controlling the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

For the mistake done by the owner, builder, Consultant, fire authority and the power authority...the poor fire personnel and the tenants shall suffer. Fire authority shamelessly announcing that the fire equipment as required are not in position or working condition.. If not in place, then I only blame the fire services department for issuing clearence for powering the building..

Good job, but who is to be blamed for all these. is the Govt of the civil defence. why cant we get into international std when it comes to building and safety of the people. there are 100''s of building in Mlore who dont have any std''s.we specially Mangalorians are one of the worst people i see who are educated but decent to the extend that we can raise our voice on any thing what happens around.

We elect leaders who are jerks of first order who dont ever turn up to the city after they are elected.people in mangalore needs to work towards betterment of the city and see what we can offer to the generations to come rather then having selfish motive.

Excellent Job done By the Fire dept under leadership of Mr Varadarajan. Keep it up. people should comment on Fire dept without knowing any thing about Fire prevention. What equipment Fire dept should have and how to use them that Fire dept only knows . others do  not know about it. Simply commenting is foolishness. Hats Up To Mr Vardarajan and His Team.Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Daiji, sitting in Qatar I got the news of the fire minutes after it must have taken place. One of my sisters works in the same building. Panic set in as we could not get in touch with her or anybody else. Then slowly pictures of the fire started to be posted on the site, and in one of them I could see my sister standing outside, safe. In earnest, it was me from Doha giving everybody back home, s on the incident. Thanks Daiji.

I received a call from my friend who was on the top floor of the building regarding the fire, I immediately called Mrs.Lekshmi Kumaran, DGM,MRPL for help as they were equipped to handle such a situation. The response was immediate. I strongly feel that, there should be a co-ordinated effort in such crisis/desaster. Desaster Management Team should be formed to communicate to the concerned agencies and manage the situation effectively like controlling/diverting the flow of traffic. Keeping the access roads open for movement of emergency vehicles.

Well done fire fighters. with primitive equipments you guys still managed to overcome all the odds. it would have been real bad. among all the happenings some times things go unnoticed. This was told by the two boys who got struck inside the snooker parlour. The heroes are unheard.

Watch the picture in daijiworld. you can see one gentle man Mr. Sunil Shetty, Manager, Pyramid Breakers sliding down the building using the maharaja restaurants smoke pipe. Before doing so he moved two boys out of the window and came down through the pipe to ask for help.

On his request rope was ped and the boys were evacuated from the fourth floor. This kind of heorism is no less than fighting in the border. appreciate the hero and should be rewarded.

I agree with u Jawar the equipments are really out dated for today fire fighting cababilities, .One correction Foam is used only for oil fire, not for other, yes for electrical DCP(Dry chemical powder) or CO2 (Gas)or Halon(Gas) or FM 200(Gas) is used but u cant spray them on open area, so ultimately water with switched off circuit breakers become ultimate FF medium.....

Great Job done by Firemen with help of the general public in extingushing the fire. Thank God there is no loss of life. This will be an eye opener for Mangalore City. Our city is growing day by day with multi storied buildings.

How safe are our multi storied buildings? Do they comply the requirements of fire safety measures? Do they have an emergency exit for the people at the time of fire? In most of the multi storied/commercial buildings in M''lore there are no adequate fire extinguishers as required. Moreover how the authorities can permit godown on the 4th Floor?

We all know that Mangalore is growing very fast. FIRE KILLS! But Preventive Safety Measures can be taken/adopted by our Local Fire Administrative Authorities, Builders and the Citizens so that our valuable lives can be saved and finanical losses can also be prevented. It is important to be aware of possible fire hazards around the home or buisiness centres and take preventive steps to protect our families and citizens. Concerned Local Fire Admin. Authorites, Builders and the citizens may please note the following preventive requirements. 1- NOC (No objection certificate) from the concerned Fire authorities should be compulsory for every building. 2- Best (modern) d fire safety solutions/equipments are to be adopted/used. 3- Fire personnel have to be given advanced fire fighting / Safety management trainings/Courses. 4- Emergency Mock Evacuation drills are to be done time to time so that people are trained in evacuation requirements. 5- Emergency Exits are to be arranged. 6- Safe and proper places are to provided for Storages. 7- AWARENESS SEMINARS are to be conducted by the concerned authorities and by the NGOs in HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) for citizens.

Once again a case of flouting the rules for pecuniary benefit! We want to be like Singapore and Shanghai but fail to keep the discipline they maintain. If adequate fire safety requirements were not in place...HOW WAS THE BUILDING PERMITTED TO BE OCCUPIED AND ESTABLISHMENTS TO BE OPENED AND FUNCTIONING THERE? Now that it is d that the fire safety of the building is insufficient...WILL THE DISTRICT ADMNISTRATION BOLDLY RULE THAT THE BUILDING SHOULD BE USED ONLY ON RECTIFYING THE DEFICIENCIES AND RE-CERTIFICATION BY THE AUTHORITIES? OR will our "Chaltha Hai" attitude overcome us in a few days?

India has made so much progress almost in all technological fields, it`s a shame it is lagging far behind when it comes to Fire Brigade, Fire Fighting and Safety Equipment, as is evident from the pictures furnished. It`s high time the authorities seriously look into this important area and improve the services.

It should also be mandatory that all the motorist give way to the Fire Fighting Brigade, and those who do not, should be penalised heavily. Thankfully, no lives were lost in this particular instance, which is a relief indeed.

After seeing the pictures we can make out how efficient our equipments are. The poor fire fighter''s have to put up with these out dated equipment''s which we can use to put out a fire on the ground. In these modern high rise buildings surely there must be fire alarm systems fitted with sprinkler''s. We always wait for something to happen to correct ourselves.

Since the day building been built has one fire drill been conducted If so most of the people would have escaped.I doubt that. Why foam is not used, I feel pity for those fire fighter''s. Why have the police not blocked the traffic to make a smooth way for the fire engines, why have the police left the people to gather near the building it''s not a show going on, people are in a risk of loosing lives.Only God has to help the trapped people.

Its a pity that spac for a godown was made available in the fourth floor. Usually godown space is always provided in the basement. Hope the fire is soon contained and all shall be well soon.

WHETHER FIRE EXIT AVAILABLE. SINCE IT IS MORE THAN 3 FLOORS, IT SHOULD HAVE A FIRE EXIT. 200 PEOPLE STRANDED CAN USE THE FIRE EXIT TO COME OUT.
