Mangalore: NMPT Dock Workers Call off 11-day Strike – Resume Work

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SB)

Mangalore, August 13: The imbroglio between dock workers of the New Mangalore Port Trust and the management seems to have come to an end with dock workers calling off their 11-day strike protesting against the National Industrial Tribunal (NIT) award implementation after a successful negotiation on Wednesday August 12.

The employees resumed work at 6 a m on Wednesday. The Memorandum of Settlement signed by the port management and the striking workers in the presence of the Assistant Labour Commissioner has achieved rationalization of manning scale in deployment of cargo handling labour and thereby consequent reduction will be 29 per cent for deploying 1 gang and 35 per cent for 2 gangs with overall reduction being 33 per cent.

This said reduction will be implemented in the first phase for the next three years and further reduction would be in the second phase, thus achieving full implementation of the NIT award subject to arriving at bilateral agreement.
