Udupi to be Developed as Model District – Dr Acharya’s I-Day Assurance

Udupi, Aug 15: Home and district in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya hoisted the Indian flag at Ajjarkadu Maidan here on Saturday August 15 as part of 63rd district-level Independence Day celebration.
Delivering his I-Day message Dr Acharya said that the development planned for the district will be a role model for the other districts to follow. Focusing on developing tourism potential in the district, minister said beaches at Malpe and Maravante, St Mary’s Island, jetty at Kaup will be developed under Rs 283 crore worth tourism department project besides plans to build a memorial in the name of litterateur late Shivaram Karanth at Kotatadu village.
Speaking on the funds sanctioned for the development works, Dr Acharya said that Rs 83 lac for Kamabalakere stadium, Rs 56 lacs for Anijari falls, Rs 11 lac for Seetanadi Nisargadhama, Rs 2.96 crore for Western Ghats and 12th Finance Commission grant for bridge and road construction has been granted besides sanctioning construction of Yatri Nivas at Karkala.
Minister said that in all Rs 25 crore has been released for the district under the Sarva Shiksha Abiyan programme and that in 2010 the deputy commissioner’s office will be housed in the new Mini Vidhana Soudha to come up in Udupi. Further, mobile clinic has been sanctioned to naxal-affected area, Amasebail, said Dr Acharya.
The achievers in the various fields were honoured. The cultural programmes organized by the district administration added colour to the freedom fervour. Deputy commissioner P Hemalatha, superintendent of police Praveen Madhukar Pawar and MP D V Sadananda Gowda among others were present.
