Mangaluru, Nov 15: The annual sports meet 2019-20 of St Agnes PU College was held on Thursday, November 14 at the college grounds upholding the aspects of sporting events.
Fr Francis Xavier Gomes, resident of CODP, Mangaluru was the guest of honour. Dr Sr Maria Roopa A C, joint secretary, St Agnes Institutions, Sr Norine Dsouza A C, principal, Sr Janet Sequeira A C, vice principal, Jayashree, physical director, Ronald D’Souza, PTA vice president, members of the PTA Executive Committee, teaching and non-teaching staff graced the occasion.
During the inaugural ceremony Rischika Thimmiah, the sports secretary received the college flag from principal Sr Norine and led the ceremonial march past to the beats played by the rhythmic college band wherein NCC Army-wing, Air-wing, Rifle marching and 20 teams from I and II PUC marched in harmony signifying discipline and self-control. This splendid march past was judged by Narayana, physical education teacher, St Agnes Special School, Christina DCosta, Physical Education teacher, Capitanio High School and Arun Prasad Rai, Cascia High School during which the chief guest Fr Gomes received the salute of honour from the marching teams.
Pramila, Lecturer in English introduced Fr Francis Xavier Gomes, the chief-guest thereafter, Jayashree introduced the marching teams to the esteemed guest after which the college flag was hoisted. Fr Gomes in his address emphasized on the importance of sports in leading a healthy life. He remarked, “We want achievers and not toppers.” Sports has to be given equal importance as that of academics, since there are brighter opportunities even in the area of sports to reach the summit of success.
Later, Five State level players and Rischika, the sports secretary handed over the Olympic torch to Rev Fr Gomes after which he declared the annual sports meet, 2019-20 of St Agnes PU College open. Dr Sr Maria Roopa and other dignitaries also released the balloons to mark the occasion. The teams entered into the spirit of true sportsmanship with the oath being administered by Rischika Thimmiah, the sports secretary.
The inaugural programme was compered by Agnes while Pooja Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
Thereafter, the events of the day began and all the students actively participated in the sporting extravaganza with zeal and enthusiasm.
The closing ceremony was held in the evening. The winners of various events were awarded by Sr Norine, principal. Carol DSouza of II SEBA ‘A’ and Diya of I PCMC ‘D’ batch were awarded the individual championship while II SEBA ‘A’ batch bagged the team championship. The Annual sports meet was then declared closed by the principal. The college flag was then lowered respectfully and was handed over to the principal. Alreya compered the valedictory programme and Dafney thanked all who toiled for the success of the sports meet. The spectacular day was ended by rendering of the national anthem.
