Corruption Tarnishing India's Image: PM

New Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS) "Pervasive corruption" was tarnishing the image of India that is respected all over the world for its secular values and "commitment to freedom", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Wednesday.

Addressing the two-day 17th biennial conference of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and State Anti-Corruption Bureaux, Manmohan Singh said the "malaise of corruption" should be treated "effectively and immediately" because it was sapping "our efforts to march ahead as a nation".

"The world respects our democracy, our plural and secular values, our independent judiciary and free press, our commitment to freedom and peace and our pursuit of equitable and inclusive growth," he said, but quickly regretted that "pervasive corruption in our country tarnishes our image".

"As the country grows and integrates with the world economy, corruption continues to be an impediment to harnessing the best of technology and resources," he said at the Vigyan Bhawan here.

Even though India is emerging as a world economic power, this social cancer called "corruption" in all levels is creating a bad image for India among the Indians, also among the foreigners.

This way of "kick back" pattern of life is very hard to break, but someway it must be eradicated. Almost 99% of the governemnt employees of all levels know the art of generating wealth by creating delay and pressure to the public and make a quick income in a short span of time. That is the old Indian way, but it has to be changed because it is too late.

Is this news. The malice of corruption started with the politicians and has now seeped into the beaurocracy, why even to the lowly peon who refused to move a file from one desk to another refuses to give a visiting card to the officer concerned refuses to search for a file= unless his hands are greased. Mr Prime Minister weed out all those who are even suspect, do not wait for them to be caught, tried and then punished because it never happens.

I have personal experiences where I have been victimised for refusing to pay a bribe, my files have dissappeared because I refused to pay a bribe, fed up I have left a Govt office after 4 hrs of waiting because the officer concerned was "busy with meetings" in his own cabin when it was not so- just because the palm was not greased.

It took me 4 months to get a permission which was for a job of national interest because I refused to pay the "speed money" for the files to be speeded up. My competitor got the permission in 11 days flat for a similar job a few months later( I lost the contract as my principals were unhappy at the delay in my case). This is life in India- we are on corruption skid row.
