Udupi: Dr A V Baliga Institute of Social Sciences and Rural Management Inaugurated

Udupi, Sep 2: The newly constructed building block of Dr A V Baliga Institute of Social Sciences and Rural Management, Harady, near here was inaugurated recently by Manipal University former vice-chancellor, Prof M S Valiathan.
 
Mumbai Dr A V Baliga Charities managing trustee U R Acharya, presided over the function.
 
Other trustees Subhash Acharya, Dr Rajaram Baliga, Dr Sandeep Baliga along with honorary advisors of Dr A V Baliga Charities, N R Prabhu, Prof P V Bhandary and Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital director Dr P V Bhandary and consultant psychiatrist Dr Virupaksha, were present at the occasion.





       
Dr A V Baliga Institute of Social Sciences and Rural Management was started in the year 2007-2008, with a vision to provide higher education to the rural children at affordable fees. The Institute initially started in the campus of Dr A V Baliga Home for the Senior Citizens, which had been inaugurated by former district deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj. The College is affiliated to Mangalore University.
 
Later on, it was decided to have an independent, well-equipped building for the Institute in a 24-acre picturesque campus. The foundation stone for the new campus was laid by Mangalore University vice-chancellor, Prof K M Kaveriappa, on February 19, 2008.
 
At present,  BSW and BA (psychology, rural development and journalism) courses are being conducted at the Institute, which has 150 students. There are plans to introduce post graduate courses in future, in the fields of social work and psychology.
