Mangalore, Sep 4: Of late, the city is transforming into a new hub for medical tourism. The fact that the number of patients coming to the city from far off places located within the country and abroad, seeking treatment for their ailments, by reposing trust on the skills of the doctors here, has been increasing over the years, stands testimony for this phenomenon.

Recently, a total shoulder replacement surgery was performed at Unity Hospital on a 49 year-old Nigerian patient named Benedict, an employee of Union Bank of Nigeria. He had suffered a complex fracture of the right shoulder two years back, following which he suffered from severe pain and restriction of right shoulder joint movements.

As part of Medical Tourism promoted by Unity Health Complex, an ISO 9001:2008 certified hospital, he travelled all the way form Nigeria to the city for treatment. He was operated upon by an orthopaedic team led by Dr B Sachidanand Rai, consultant orthopaedic joint replacement surgeon of the hospital. Dr Gopal Hegde, Dr Suresh Bhat, Dr Ismail and Dr Sanjay Shahri were also part of the team that successfully treated this patient.

German newspapers sometimes publish articles about the high standard of private Indian hospitals. And it is well known more and more people from different European countries (especially from The UK) travel to India, Bangalore and Vellore to receive an excellent medical treatment at best equipped private hospitals. The costs of the treatment is inexpensive compared to Europe.

This medical tourism will grow in the coming years - but India should try to offer its high standard of medicine to all its citizens even to the poorest of the poor. Sufficient medical treatment is an absolutely necessary and it should be granted all human beings whether they can afford it or not. Best Kurt

United we rise, divided we fall. Mangalore has great potential for Medical Tourism & Higher Education. The Govt should develope the beaches with Baywatch stations, Ayurveda treating Resorts, raod-side market, row shops, one-day/week bazars & all season international std. roads for the incoming national & international tourists.

Not all the doctors reliable as some Ortho recommend surgery for money. Hence be cautious. Take minimum 3 opinions before you decide to do anything
