Over 9,622 acres of defence land encroached upon: Minister


New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS): A total 9,622.807 acres of defence land are encroached upon across the country, Minister of State (Defence) Shripad Naik told the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Replying to a query, the minister said the government has conceived a time-bound plan to retrieve the land.

The minister said the government is strengthening defence land management by digitising land records and also by carrying out survey, demarcation and verification of defence lands.

"Regular inspection of sites under respective jurisdiction is conducted by the Chief Executive Officer, Defence Estates Officers, station commander as the case may be," the minister said.

He also said that detailed instructions have been issued emphasising the need for ensuring vigilance, detection and prevention of new encroachments.
