Bantwal, Sep 5: It’s amazing to see how the labourers hired to undertake works on flyover coming up as part of fourlane works at National Highway-48 near B C Road here. But what has saddened the citizens is that these labourers who have been working day and night for the past three years have no security for their life.

It is mandatory that to ensure safety of the labourers, who are working on heights gears such as helmets, shoes and glares for labourers undertaking welding works are provided. However, labourers here are deprived of such facilities. The facilities for safety of labourers apart these have not been provided proper ladders that enable them to work properly. These labourers have made it a practice to climb up and down using the ropes or temporary ladders made of iron beams.

Meanwhile following the order of deputy commissioner the works on the flyover has gained pace. The pedestrians, the people passing through the route on vehicles dread at the thought of some perphernalia used for the construction might harm them.

As a panacea though district administration banned vehicles moving towards B C Road town, the ban was not implemented and withdrawn for various reasons. The recent episodes of collapsing of iron beams supporting the pillars of the flyover or overturning of crane has been the reminders of the grave danger, which so far either the district administration or the labour department has been refusing to buy.
