'Over Ten Million People in India Speak Tulu'

Beltangady, Sep 7: “Over Ten Million (one crore) people in India speak Tulu”, said Dr M Mohan Alva, chief secretary, Vishwa Tulu Sammelan committee and chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri.
Dr Alva was speaking at the preliminary meet on convening the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan (World Tulu Convention). This meet was held at Kinyamma Yane Ganapati auditorium, Guruvayanakere, on the evening of Monday September 7.
“‘Nempu’, a souvenir, will be released during the Sammelan which is likely to be attended by nearly one lac people. It will be a milestone in the history of the taluk and every native Tulu speaker should unite to put forth a great show during the forthcoming Sammelan”, said Dr Alva.
“A study workshop on the Tulu script will be held at SDM College, Ujire, from Saturday September 12 to Monday September 14, by committee chief secretary Dr B Yasho Varma for the benefit of all those interested in learning. A regional programme on Tulunadu, Tulu language and its people, will be held at Karkala on Saturday September 19 and Sunday September 20. A Tulunadu food festival will be held during the Sammelan at Ujire”, he added.
Dr Padmaprasad Ajila, Ujire SDM Education Society vice-president Professor S Prabhakar, and Tahsildar Chidanand were present on the dais.
MLA Vasant Bangera released the entry coupons for the Sammelan by presenting one to Dr Alva.
Tulu Sahitya Academy member D Yadupati Gowda announced that the Academy will contribute Rs 2 lac towards the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan.
Principal Krishnappa Poojary proposed the vote of thanks while teacher Dharanendra Jain compered the programme.
