Racing win Argentina's inaugural Champions Trophy

Mar del Plata (Argentina), Dec 15 (IANS): Racing Club has secured the first edition of Argentina's Champions Trophy by defeating Tigre 2-0 in the coastal city of Mar del Plata.

Racing took the lead on the half-hour mark when Walter Montoya squared a pass to Matias Rojas, who calmly fired into an unguarded net late on Saturday.

Montoya and Rojas again combined on the stroke of halftime, with the latter scoring almost in identical fashion after a counter-attack, reports Xinhua news agency.

The match pitted 2018-19 Superliga Argentina champions Racing against Copa de la Superliga holders Tigre.

It was the final fixture of the year for clubs in Argentina's top domestic leagues. The country's premier football division -- the Superliga Argentina -- will return from a summer recess on January 19.
