Mangaluru, Dec 20: A day after violent protests rocked the city, claiming two lives, city police commissioner Dr P S Harsha on Friday December 20 said that the situation in the city was peaceful with no untoward incidents being reported during the day.

Addressing a press meet here, Dr Harsha said, "Curfew has been imposed in five police station limits. The situation today has been peaceful. Police forces have been deployed in necessary and sensitive areas.

"We have done an assessment of the law and order situation in the city. The curfew will be in place till midnight of December 22. On Friday, the curfew was relaxed for two hours for Friday prayers.

"Additional DG Dayanand from Bengaluru has been called to the city to assess law and order," he added.

Regarding the protests on Thursday that turned violent with protesters pelting stones and police opening fire as well as lathi-charging, resulting in the death of two protesters, the police commissioner said, "Totally 33 police personnel were injured, and some of them are serious. They are being closely monitored. Five civilians were also injured."

With regard to the arrest and later release of Kerala journalists on Friday, he said, "We asked them (journalists) to show us their media accreditation cards, which they failed to provide. We wrote to the government concerned to find out the accreditation of the journalists. As curfew was imposed, it would have been difficult for them to move around the city, so they were safely sent back to their state. Totally there were seven journalists."

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The two persons who were killed in police firing during the protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act in the city on Thursday December 19 were laid to rest here on Friday December 20.

Jaleel Kudroli (49), a resident of Kandak and Nausheen Bengre (23) were killed during the protests that rocked the city on Thursday. In a press meet later, the police commissioner had said that the cops took the drastic action as the protesters were about to set a police station on fire.

On Friday, amidst the curfew, the police themselves escorted the mortal remains from Wenlock hospital to a mosque in Falnir, where the bodies were washed, and thereafter took them to the houses of their respective families. The final rites were held in Zeenath Baksh mosque at Bunder and Kudroli mosque in the presence of close family members and locals, with the police providing security.

The entire process was held peacefully as not many people joined due to the curfew.

Sec 144 being imposed for 48+ hours in the entire district for an isolated incident of violent protests seems to be unwarranted as it has put a lot of hardship to the common man especially daily wagers and small businesses, already reeling under a crisis, who are the worst hit!
This will further escalate the deep economic crisis that we are going through! While facing heavy losses,it will take at least a week for businesses to stabilize especially those dealing in logistics, perishable items, farmers and service industries!

There are videos out on social media. It's evident that people who are protesting don't even know why and what they are protesting against?! It's so unfortunate that such people have been brainwashed into lies without checking facts themselves by opposition parties. The media should ask the protesters what they know about the actual CAA and how it affects an Indian citizen. Educated Indians know the facts and understand it's merits or demerits. We don't need to come on the roads to protest and destroy public property for a law that does not even affect us the Indian citizens. Peaceful protesting is a democratic right but not vandalizing and damaging public properties!!!!

Do you think that Modi knew what GST all about? Do you think that he was very clear in NRC and CAA? If you ask Amit Sha and Modi, I am sure that they will never be known what exactly their going to implement. They have stubborn heart and very Hindu supportive ideas. I mean Hindu supportive ideas but not religious values. They do not have religious values but just religious ideas. Value based people never curb rights of citizen and will never heart other religions.
I challenge that none of the BJP MPs are also not clear what is all about CAA and NRC. Hence why can't a person without knowing about the concept cannot support the team?
He is a team member not the leader. You're wrong to expect everyone to be a leader. Many do not know what is aadhar in India. It doesn't mean that they should not have aadhar. Hope you will be clear with this.

It's pity no one is even bothered about the horrific economic crisis in the Country now.

Mangalore's people will face further hardship in business and job's because of the 'a bad city' image.

    NRC is not an issue, but when implemented, as Chethan Baghat tweeted;

A poor Hindu goes to NRC office
"Sir, I am poor. I don't have papers. But I am an Indian"
Babu says " Ok No problem"

    Similarly
A poor Christian or Muslim goes to the NRC office.
"Sir, I am a poor Christian/Muslim. I don't have papers. But I am an Indian"
Babu says " Not Ok, Prove you are Indian or you will not be included in the register. Go and find your country wherever it is"

Is the logic at least be right by a minimum?

    have you read NRC?
with the conviction you are saying it to others i am sure you must have.

the nation needs so much of good measures and implementation of acts required for the welfare of poor and medium class. including very strong focus on revival of economy.

we want the government to focus on our rights to 4 fundamental requirements

    ANNA, ANGI, AUSHADHA and AASAREY
(measures to provide food, clothes, healthcare and shelter like in a good developed/developing nations).

When these very basic rights itself have not been met at good standards, all other unnecessary things can wait.

however, I request all fellow Mangaloreans not to venture into violent protest, hurting our policemen and vandalising properties.

at the end this is our nation. we should stand united and should put forth our point peacefully to the government.

Protesting through violence and destruction of public or private property should never be encouraged. That said, I think, the central government failed to either educate the public well in advance or brought in a law that was not necessary. I am sure there were other ways of dealing with illegal citizens instead of bringing a new law and creating confusion. This confusion provided enough fodder for a few politicians who are opposed to NDA/BJP to escalate the tension. Hope, there will be some amendments to the new law to help control the situation not to mention, the current law will be reviewed by the SC to see whether it is unconstitutional or not.

Now you may be legal Indian citizen what if your name difference make you illigal or your family member illigal just because spelling mistakes (done by the officials not you).

May be you are dreaming i will get instant citizenship since I am not Muslim... however do you know the entire process : Still its not clear what are the documents are considered if Adharcard, Passport. Ration card, Voter Ids, School certificate are NOT considered ? If you become illegal (non-Muslim) then you will be in detention center, if you fail to prove in tribunal court then you can apply for citizenship, you need to agree all terms (not clear what will be terms) then you will become NEW Citizen.

Look at some of them getting beaten, stoned, kicked and seriously injured by these hooligans. Is this the way? The policemen those who can run are running for their life and others giving up and lying on the ground. But they are still protecting common citizens from these your so called protesters with weapons, stones etc. Share a thought for them.
