BANGALORE, Sep 11 (PTI): Bharat Earth Movers Limited on Friday achieved a milestone with the manufacture and delivery of India's first standard gauge metro car and the nation's first aluminium 80-tonne wagon.

The Broad Gauge Metro train is a four car formation, comprising two driving trailer cars and two motor cars with a capacity to carry 1,506 passengers.

The air-conditioned cars have been designed and manufactured to meet global standards with regard to passenger comfort and safety, are corrosion resistant and have an aesthetic exterior with a stainless steel car body and fire retardant GFRP interior panels, BEML said.

The cars have electrically automated passenger doors to ensure passenger safety.

BEML has bagged a Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) order worth Rs 1,672.5 crore for the supply of 150 metro cars. The first set is expected to be delivered by October 2010 for test purposes.

The aluminium wagon of 80 tonne capacity with bottom discharge are durable, capable of carrying larger loads and require less maintenance.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa symbolically handed over the Metro Car to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan at a function here. The 80 ton aluminium wagon was handed over by the Minister of State for Railways K H Muniyappa to NALCO CMD C R Pradhan.

It is to be known that: 1. This is not the first one and it is the 8th Train. 2. Already 6 Trains were sent, since May''09, to Delhi on Road (Trailor) 3. It is made along with Hyundai Rotem and Melco, and Beml should not take all the credit. It is unfortunate that the Media persons are not aware of these things.

Congrats to BEML.. Remains to be seen exatly who designed to metro car. whether there is any colaboration with other companies.. how many percent of the spare parts have come from china.. Its important for india to manufacture most of the spare parts in any field, specially for the Gvt. owned companies for the pride and devolopment of our country.

Great news!. These are something unique, roomy, classy and comfortable carriages, which I never had imagined that will be introduced so soon, in our Metro Transport system, and I am sure they will be very popular and have great demand, immediately in India, and then all over the world. Well done BEML and your team of Engineers who are responsible for the design and manufacture of these engines and carriages, and congratulations on this excellent venture.

With the absence of Local Trains like that we have in Mumbai, the metro cars will greatly help to ease the traffic congestion and pollution problems in Bangalore which is affecting the City badly today. It`s nice to see that New Delhi is already on the move to put into service some of these Metro Cars. I think the city of Pune also should consider introducing this system as the traffic congestion and pollution over there is equally bad. By the way, could some one enlighten me as to what the term `bottom discharge` means? Thanks.

Great achievement. But it will be really a great milestone if we can export our products until then we have to depend on a defunct govt to develop infra structure all over the country to really develop this industry and to bring in more private players and futuristic technology to be a surviving industry
