Mangaluru Dec 22: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district Muslim Central Committee on Sunday December 22 demanded judicial probe into the recent protest in Mangaluru opposing Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The anti-CAA protests in Mangaluru on December 19 had turned violent, with protesters pelting stones and police opening fire and using tear gas on them. Two persons, Abdul Jaleel of Kandak and Nausheen of Kudroli were killed in the police firing.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, president of Muslim Central Committee K S Mohammed Masood said, "We demand a judicial inquiry into the protest. We are not ready to accept any other inquiry except judicial inquiry. Who is responsible for the police firing that claimed two innocent lives and caused injury to seven or eight persons? Who ordered the imposition of Section 144, information about which was not properly conveyed to the general public?

"We also demand maximum compensation to the families of the deceased, governement jobs and educational help for the families. We also demand the government to provide hospital expenses for the injured persons," he added.

"The protest which was scheduled to be held on December 28 by the Muslim Central Committee has now been postponed to January 4 at Nehru Maidan. We had to postpone because Christmas and New Year celebrations are coming up. We will seek prior permission for the protest," said Masood.

When asked about the alleged involvement of Keralites in stone-pelting, former MLA Mohiudeen Bava said, "It was a wrong statement given by the local police. If there had been any Keralite involved, at least one of them would have been injured and hospitalised, but none of them have."
