Thousands attend pro-CAA demonstration in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Dec 22 (IANS): Thousands of people staged a sit-in demonstration here on Sunday in support of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

"All pro-Indian organisations and people who chant Bharat mata ki jai and Vande Mataram demonstrated in support of CAA," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson G. Madhusudhana told IANS.

The Karnataka BJP wing supported the rally at the Townhall centre and tweeted: "Namma Bengaluru comes out in a big way to support the CAA. Thank you Kannadigas for standing up for Bharata Mata."

Meanwhile, one CAA supporter was attacked with knives in Bengaluru.

Bengaluru South MP, Tejasvi Surya tweeted that unknown bike-borne people attacked a BJP follower, Varun, with machetes and knives after participating in the pro-CAA rally.

"Our karyakarta Varun was brutally assaulted with machetes and knives by bike-borne unknown elements at Bamboo Bazaar after pro-CAA rally," said Surya.

Surya said though Varun suffered multiple injuries and skull a fracture, thankfully he is in stable condition now.

"I appeal to everyone to please maintain calm and peace. Violence helps none," added Surya.

The young member of parliament also supported the Act saying, "CAA doesn't take away rights of Indians, especially minorities. It only grants citizenship to religiously persecuted from three countries which historically share landmass with India."

At the CAA support demonstration, Surya appealed people to understand the context and the necessity of the bill.

Attempting to demystify CAA, the BJP said the new law protects the interests of the tribals and indigenous people of the Northeast by excluding areas under the Sixth Schedule and places covered by the Inner Line Permit.

"There is no question of foreigners swamping indigenous population," said the BJP sharing a few more CAA myth-busters.

In contrast to earlier protests, the CAA support rally on Sunday featured several people sporting saffron apparel and flags, along with the tri-colour and placards in Hindi and English.

Some of the placards read, 'It's now or never. #save India', 'I support CAA', and 'CAA is secular'. A huge flexi banner read 'India supports CAA'.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao had imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) from 6 a.m. on Thursday to Saturday midnight in view of the shutdown call by social and student organisations.

With the police ban ending at midnight Saturday, a pro-CAA demonstration was held on Sunday.

Former Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Dinesh Gundu Rao criticised the BJP saying, "the BJP is caught in a web of its own deceit. It's not we who linked CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) but Amit Shah himself."

He said Prime Minister Narenda Modi should not mislead people on such issue.

Readers Please check this comment from Swathi Chaturvedi in NDTV. “The NRC was designed by Shah to win the West Bengal election due in 2021. Shah has reportedly told senior BJP leaders and the RSS chief that this was his dream for the Sangh. West Bengal has a large Muslim population and Shah has portrayed Chief Mamata Banerjee as practising minority appeasement. The BJP is seeking to encash on the large migrant Hindu population of West Bengal with the NRC rolling out just in time for the state's election. Banerjee has been fierce in her resistance to Shah and after he triumphed by winning 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 election, she hired election strategist Prashant Kishor and has been on a campaign overdrive. Banerjee, currently the most demonised leader in the BJP lexicon, was of a piece with Shah. The BJP hopes to capture West Bengal with the NRC as a potent electoral weapon in the state elections due in 2021.”

Hindu refugees are a deciding factor in nearly 80 assembly seats in the state, whereas Muslims constitute a sizeable chunk of voters in around 90 constituencies. Apart from this, Hindu refugees are also spread in around 40-50 other seats, comprising in between 10 and 15 per cent of the electorate. "Neither the TMC nor the Left Front have done anything for the refugees in so many decades. It is the BJP that is giving them citizenship. So if there is a political dividend, then it will be the BJP that will get the benefits," West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh told PTI.

Decoding the political implications of the CAB, a senior state BJP leader who did not wish to be named said the Bill would serve dual purpose for the BJP as it would further consolidate Hindus in its favour and blunt the TMC's theory that BJP is an "anti-Bengali" party.

CAB/NRC is nothing by Demonetisation 2 which was purely made to win the UP assembly elections

Regardless of the motive behind the CAA. The people of this country now are able to see how badly the minorities are treated by the theocratic countries. they can also gauge now as to how pathetic the Hindus condition will be when demography becomes skewed to their disadvantage. This love for secularism is a numbers game for some. they want religious Law when the numbers are to their advantage. that is for sure.

Dear Rajesh, thank you for seeing and admitting the motive, which in all ways an ill motive. Your comment about the treatment of the minorities in the theocratic countries has no relevance here since our country itself has so many problems which needs to be tackled and solved, slump in the GDP, drop in the industrial production, unemployment, inflation/increasing prices, diving Rupee, dwindling investments. Government should focus on solving these problems than raking up the NRC/CAA issues. These are just a ploy to divert the attention of the people from these dire problems. Compared to the costs of CAA/NRC, the benefits will be nil and this will be a bigger waste than the demonetization

    Mitron... Bhaktoon....
Please clarify CAA+NRC combo from following 3 perspectives:
Socially, Legally and Financially (most important)
Has Govt done social feasibility analysis?
Has Govt done financially feasibility analysis?
Has Govt done Cost Vs Benefit analysis?
Has Govt thought about better options?

First try to understand the situation. Without having the knowledge don’t blame anyone. Till 2014 congress supported the NRC. Their leaders talked infavour of NRC & they demanded citizenship for religiously persecuted minorities of Pak,Bangla & Afghanistan. Even Ambedkar, Gandhiji also known this fact. But now the congress & other political parties are opposing it for vote bank politics. They are not worried for this country instead they worried about vote bank politics.
