Mandya: Bride says 'no' at altar, walks away from church for lover

Daijiworld Media Network - Mandya (MS)

Mandya, Dec 30: All of us have watched various climaxes in movies that are based on love stories. But it is not possible for such endings to happen in real life. However, in a shocking incident that has taken place at Pandavapura of Mandya district, the bride, when asked by the priest whether she is willing to marry the groom said, ‘No. I am not interested in this marriage’, and walked out of the church.

The nuptials of Christian girl Meena (name changed) was fixed at a church in Pandavapura on Sunday, December 29. But she there was anti-climax in the event as she walked away refusing to marry the groom.

Meena was in love with Harish (name changed), a Hindu boy, since two years. But her family members had fixed her marriage with a Christian groom from Mysuru. Both Meena and Harish had decided to inform their respective families and get married in future. However, as Meena is a minor she agreed to marry the boy her parents her fixed for her.

The engagement of Meena with the Christian boy had taken place two months ago and the marriage was fixed on Sunday, December 29. Incidentally, Meena also completed 18 years of age on Sunday. On Sunday, when the priest, as per the Christian tradition asked Meena to give her confirmation to marry the Christian boy, she surprised everyone by saying no. The family members of Meena were shocked and tried to convince her to change her mind. But Meena was adamant and said that she is in love with the Hindu boy and she will marry him only.

Meena called the Hindu boy, with whom she is in relationship since two years, and requested the priest to conduct their marriage. There was chaos in the church for some time due to this request of the bride. However, Pandavapura police, who got the information of the matter, immediately rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.

The police called the parents of both Meena and Harish to the police station. But they refused to oblige. So the police kept Harish in the police station and sent Meena to the Mahila Santvana Kendra in Mandya.

Public is curious to know the climax of this story, which is still not over.

What kind of drama is this ? Better say no for arranged marriage if the girls love some other guy. They put the parents and relatives in an embarassing position.

What Meena has done will one day be repeated by her children. Then she will know how painful her parents felt for what she did. Remember the proverb, if you sow wind, you will reap whirlwind. We have several stages before the final "I DO" to be given before the altar.

The submission of Baptism and Confirmation certificates, the Marriage Preparation Course certificate, the Pre-Nuptial Enquiry, the reading of Banns in the Church or displayed in the Notice Board for 3 weeks. After all these stages the final vows are taken in front of the altar.

She could have avoided all these by just informing her parents that she is not interested in marriage. Once she was above 18 years, she could have revealed her love for her boyfriend. Instead she did a wrong thing by going through the whole process and then abandoning the last step which could have been avoided and the financial costs of both the parties. Anyway good luck for her and her boyfriend if she feels they can live happily.

Nowadays youngsters enjoy all the privileges of marriage right in young age, so what excitement is then left in "marraige"?? Girls earn more than boys by virtue of which they dominate the boy & his family!!

IMHO, the institution of marriage is dying down; here I am reminded about Osho!!

You are right, I did not go through the full contents of the article.

"Regarding the marriage, I don't like such marriages against parents wishes.
Parents take care of us for so many years and we can not ditch them"

All are not equal in their attitude and fulfilling their hearts desires.
The generation is changed and partly it depends on the family up bring and parents moral guidance how they shape their children.

She could have avoided making all the arrangements and spending lots of money and final letting her parents and loved one down.
One way good that she broke the marriage to join her lover, instead of running away with her boyfriend after completing the wedding process. Hope that she will not repeat the mistake yet once again.

    Read the news fully....
Bride has already told to her parents and all knew very well

here parents wanted to play smart and girl proved she is smarter than parents.
If she runs away before marriage date 29th Dec, parents can book case against lover Harish for taking away underaged girl
After 29th Dec, parents were sure that girl will be major and openly go with lover Harish.
Hence, they planned the marriage on the very same day and this is what happened at the end of the day.

Regarding the marriage, I don't like such marriages against parents wishes.
Parents take care of us for so many years and we can not ditch them
I am saying this, even if the same caste, against parents one should not get married.
If possible convince parents fully and they will agree after initial denials

No doubt 3 lives were saved from the girls decision, but the girl took the wrong path, imagine the embarrassing situation for the groom and his family, mental pressure on the would be groom who has done no wrong.

The girl could have gone to the police earlier or even inform the parish priest instead of creating a drama till the point of exchanging the martial vows at the altar, she has directly mocked her religion in doing so.

Another ascpect being the financial loss cost by her decision to both families as marriage these days cost significant expenditure.

Why do they need permission from the parents to allow two consenting adults to get married?

Why the boy is kept in police station and girl sent to Mahila Santvana Kendra?
Is there any amendment to the Indian constitution silently that we take permission from police or parents to get married to the one we love?

Policemen is aware we are not in America. We have our most respected 'INDIAN CULTURE' over and above our law and order.

How they respect their parents they too felt to respect the parents of both boy and girl. It is only a matter of RESPECT to the parents of the girl who put them in embarrassing situation. I am sure if this happened to you, you would have realized this!

Its a sad story. No need to drag in religion to every story. Its about two young people. First of all parents should try to convince the children and children should also think about their parents. How much have the parents sacrificed for them. At the same time parents should also not be adamant. Children should also remember that one day they too will become parents. I think it is a matter of communication.

This is possible only in Christian community. In other two communities, she would have been hacked to death on the spot.

Praise The Lord. One should be allowed to follow their will, but with some parental advice. Rest is left to destiny as no one knows how any arranged, love or relationship will turn out after months or years.

There are many girls who get married and after a few days run after their former lovers. This is more shocking.

A marriage without the concent of both the partners is both illegal and illicit. Therefore there should not be force by any party to get married.

However in inter religious marriages the families of the boy and girl can try to convince them but the final decision should be kept to the latter.

There is also a provision in Catholic church to marry a person of other religion. The other party has to promise that he/ she will give freedom of practicing his/her religion to his/her spouse.

Very true sir. I am a Hindu and my first love was a Mangalore Catholic lady.

Her elder sister had married against the wishes of her parents and hence parents cut off all connections with her.

Subsequently her father died which her mum blamed on her sister.

When I proposed to her, she refused with a heavy heart and told me that she loves me but she doesn't want to see her mum sad again as it had taken 5 years for her mum to recover from the "emotional" trauma.
She is still in my heart and even shared our story with my wife !!

What is the mistake of the boy and his family. What will be their mental situation.

Girl should have called the boy whom she got engaged and explained to him before fixing the marriage.

What is going on with brides in these days? Bride is running away from groom day before marriage or same day.

Lot of un wanted affair issues. In some cases bride is looking for high end expectation , Bungalow, car , cook, servent...etc where groom hardly can afford these things even if he holds 5 different jobs in Dubai.

Bride is not willing to stay with mother in law not even for 2 weeks which is most common almost everywhere.

Might be she couldnt convince her parents who might be very rigid in their decision, she shud ve told her fiancee before the marriage, even if he was not in a mind to give up his decision of marriage, the system of marriage in christian marriages were both the groom and bride is asked for their true decision has showed up its importance..
But again the bride and the lover would be responsible for their future consequences.. God give strength to parents and couples to lead their lives happily..
