Mysore: 4,500 Cyclists Put Dasara on Fast Track

Mysore, Sep 20: About 4,500 cyclists including children participated in a colourful Heritage Cycle Rally as part of Dasara on Sunday, September 20.
The rally was organised for the first time during Dasara to create awareness on fuel conservation and environmental protection.
The event was flagged off by District In-charge Minister Shobha Karandlaje near Oriental Research Institute on Krishnaraja Boulevard. She also pedaled a cycle upto some distance with the rallyists.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Visweshwara Hegde Kageri and State Planning Board Vice-Chairman D.H. Shankara Murthy also followed her on cycles from the start-off point till Maharaja's College Hostel Circle.
The cycle rally passed through Ramaswamy Circle, Gun House, Nanjangud Road, Zoo, Nazarbad, Chamundi Vihar Stadium, SP's office Circle, Ashoka Road, Devaraj Urs Road and culminated at Maharaja's College Grounds covering a distance of about 6 kms.
The children were in their school uniforms while others wore colourful outfits, all wearing white caps. Many of them carried placards with slogans like 'Use cycle, save fuel and cycling protects environment.'
The enthusiastic cyclists were greeted and cheered all through the route by onlookers. The organisers had arranged breakfast for the participants after the event. Drinking water was also provided to them on the cycling route. Certificates were also issued to them.
MLCs Siddaraju and Bharathi Shetty, Sub-Committee Chairman M.M. Mohan, Working President N.S. Shivarajegowda, Vice-Chairman T. Narayana, Member-Secretary Sarojini, Karnataka Exhibition Authority Chairman B.P. Manjunath and others were present.
More than 500 men, women & kids perform
In a spectacular event, more than 500 men and women, young and old, participated in 'Yoga Dasara' and Mass 'Surya Namaskara' in front of Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple of Mysore Palace.
Minister Shobha Karandlaje inaugurated the event by showering flowers on the portrait of Maharshi Patanjali.
Patanjali Yoga Shikshana Samithi Convenor A.R. Ramaswamy, Mayor Purushotham, Dasara Yoga Committee Deputy Special Officer Mallikarjun, Chairman Dr. A.S. Chandrashekhar, Working President B.S. Harish, Deputy Mayor Sharadamma, Corporator Pushpalatha, Karnataka Zoo Authority Chairman Nanjundaswamy and others were present.
Dasara Yoga Committee Vice-Chairman Dr. Raghavendra R. Pai, while welcoming the gathering, explained about the importance of yoga.
The participants, clad in white, performed mass Surya Namaskara led by Dr. Raghavendra Pai.
The Minister and other dignitaries watched the performance of Surya Namaskara.
Students from more than 52 yoga institutions of the city performed various yogasanas.
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Shobha said that yoga was an effective tool in maintaining physical and mental health and 152 countries have adopted it. Yoga should become a part of everybody's life. "Our health is affected because of the modern day food habits and yoga has been an effective remedy," she explained.
