Kasargod, Sep 22: Five policemen including a circle inspector were injured in the disturbances caused in the town, when a few youngsters went berserk. The policemen have registered cases against 11 persons.  Over 40 motor bikes and more than 50 youths were taken into custody by the policemen, relating to the incident.

After the policemen resorted to caning to disperse a large crowd which indulged in stone pelting at the policemen, about 25 persons suffered injuries.

On Sunday night, a day prior to Eid, the policemen were questioning a few youngsters on motor-bikes near the Old Bus Stand area for riding their vehicles at unacceptable speeds within the town limits. At that time, a bottle had come from nowhere and landed on the policemen. After a crowd mobbed the policemen, the policemen caned them to disperse them. The crowd then moved to the area near the New Bus Stand and started throwing stones at the policemen, damaging their vehicle.

Town circle inspector T P Premarajan, constables Jose, Shibu and three others were injured. All of them were admitted into the government general hospital in the town. The circle inspector has suffered fracture of the hand. Out of the injured people, three were admitted into the government hospital. The frictions between the policemen and the people continued till 12 am. Locals Abdul Sattar Karadka (22), M H Iftikar Shiria Mutangate (21), Abdul Karim Badiadka (25), journalists Rahiman Tayilangadi and Zubair Pallikkal were among the injured.

The policemen have seized about 40 motor bikes. Deputy superintendent of police, Abdul Gafoor, has been supervising the operations. The policemen said that the violation of ban orders against bursting of crackers and not to hold motor bike rallies resulted in the friction. The people burst crackers and held bike rally, thus violating the ban.
