Sofia (Bulgaria), Jan 6 (IANS): One Bulgarian football fan died and two others were injured in Greece after an attack by supporters of a local team, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

A group of nine Bulgarians attended a football match between the two Thessaloniki clubs Aris and PAOK on Saturday. On Sunday a group of around 20 PAOK supporters attacked them just before their departure for Bulgaria, the ministry said.

During the incident, one of the Bulgarian fans received a blow on his head, after which he was hit by a moving car, the ministry said, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Despite the efforts of doctors at the local hospital, he died," reported the ministry.

Two other Bulgarians were injured and admitted to a hospital in Thessaloniki and subsequently discharged, the ministry said.

According to the press release the Greek police are working to arrest the perpetrators. Greek police believe that the Bulgarian citizens did not provoke the attack, the ministry added.
