Karnataka Secretariat Turns Fortress to Foil Congress Siege Plan

Bangalore, Sep 26 (IANS) Karnataka's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government Saturday turned the state secretariat, Vidhana Soudha, into a fortress guarded by hundreds of police personnel to foil the Congress's bid to lay siege to the building to protest the government's policies.

Around 100 Congress leaders, legislators and former legislators were arrested as they tried to enter the stately building housing offices of the chief minister, the assembly, legislative council and senior officers.

The Congress, the main opposition party in the state, planned the siege to protest what it described as the BJP government's failure to provide relief to people affected by drought in some parts of the state and floods in others, to tackle the worsening power situation and delay in providing ration cards to four million families living below the poverty line.

The Congress planned a meeting of its office-bearers, legislators and former legislators in Vidhana Soudha as part of the 'siege' plan. However, police stopped them about a kilometre away from the secretariat.

State Congress president R.V. Deshpande and leader of the Congress legislature party Siddaramaih condemned the state government for the deployment of massive police force to 'suppress' the opposition parties' right for peaceful protest.

Deshpande and Siddaramaih told reporters that their party "will not be cowed down by such show of force and will only intensify the agitation against the (chief minister) B.S. Yeddyurappa government in the coming days."

Apart from the Congress leaders, media persons were also not allowed to enter the secretariat.

BJP Government instead of i)Distributing Ganga water should have distributed food for poor, ii)Distributing Tirupati ladoos in Karnataka should have taken care of farmers & distributed Urea iii)Instead of withdrawing cases filled against communal groups by earlier government should have withdrawn cases filled against poor protesters & farmers iv)Instead of providing training to archakas should have trained our educated poor youngsters Do you still require proof for government which is biased to certain group of people instead being for all groups of people

I strongly believe that the congress now came to know that they cannot get more than 5 seat in Karnataka. that is why all this drama. Mr. Siddharamaya thinks as if he is doing something great in his tenure / congress ruling. Mr. deshpande cannot speak proper kannada. Mr. sivakumar lost in the crowd. All this congress people are jealous of bjp ruling the state.

Dear Mr Ashok/Kundapur, You very well know that they are promoting manu culture and caste system (varna system). They dont need shudras to come up to the levels of brahmins and they need only shudras (especially dalits and untouchables) to remain where they were. BJP is not promoting or patronising hinduism as coined by the the supreme court of India, but they are promoting vedic hinduism in which brahmins are supreme and rajadharma is in the hands of acharyas who act as advisors to rulers. By doing so brahmins are trying to get back lost glory and powerful social position once they used to enjoy. In BJP promoted hinduism, no two Indians are equal and they believe in respect by birth and not by deeds. Have they promoted other than brahminism and caste system? They certainly dont want all hindus to be equal but like to oppress and suppress others. In doing that they feel Islam/christianity a big obstacle where there is no caste system and everyone is treated equal. Thats the reason they advocate for ban on religious conversion. It is not Indian hindu dharma is at danger but brahminism is at risk and losing its charm. So they want to revive it. But unfortunately common man does not understand it.

Police action is perfect here. At no stage, for any political party or organisation, for sealing or such activities of an institutiton as LokSabha or Vidhana Soudha or so, should be allowed. If permitted it shows only lack of law & order, or disrespect for system. Congress could have chosen other forms of protest, & sadly they have accepted a cheap way round.

Ashok/Dubai, Udupi, Well said. I agree with you. BJP must be given time to prove its credibility. BJP in karnataka has inherited tonnes of problems from JDS/Congress rule, They first have to clean up the mess and march forward and opposition must co operate. But in India opposition is only interested in power and wants the ruling government to come down.

BJP if it sheds off its communual image, can be a good opposition. If any party to become a national party, its ideologies must be inclusive and must cover and include all sections of society and not just one section. They must stop the politics of devision, hate and religion. They must focus on issues of national interest and issues that concerns average Indian and not just brahmins.....

John Pais, Congress has done nothing new. Every opposition, time ang again has done this and even in the future it will go on. Congress is no beter. They are still in deep slumber and still thinking that a few lac votes from the minority will save their sinking ship. This laying siege to Vidhana Soudha is just an eye wash and not done with true purpose or motive. But the way BJP thwarted this is something ridiculous. It is as if the entire state police force is meant just for BJP's safety. Are protests, laying siege, bundhs new to BJP? They came to power in Karnatak with these same means. How many time did they call for state-wide bundh for silly reasons? Didn't they lay siege to Vidhana Soudha both during SM Krishna as well as J H Patel's regime? Today's CM Yeddyurappa was in the forefront of all these protests. I don't say all those were unjustified and unreasonable. Sometimes they were necessary to shrug off the lethargic attitude of the ruling party. Ruling party just cannot by-pass every protest saying that opposition does it for political gain. Whatever the circus these political parties to for their political gain, it it has even a iota of truth, must be taken seriously by the government for sake of the welfare of the people. At the end of the day Congress and BJP both are nothing but two faces of same coin. Only their names are different but not motives, purposes and way of work.

Congress has learnt lessons too late. They expected people to revolt against anti-people BJP govt and vote for them in large numbers. Now that they have understood BJP's power politics, they should get togethor with farmers, dalits, JD(s),minorities and get out of AC chambers to work again for masses. They also need to connect with educated voters, who find congress is no better.

Calvin - you say this is fascism. You are in US, will US govt allow you to threaten locking down Capitol or White House? Try that and see how they treat you. Congress threatened to lock Vidhana Soudha, so it is appropriate that govt proactively acted before mob damages govt buildings.

Well, a party s that they are going to lockup vidhana soudha the power center! How can this be allowed. if nothing is done, then there is no end. every one will start doing the same to gain political milage. moreover there is section 144 in and around VS. Ploce were just doing their job. They are damned for doing anything. If there was some violence then they are blamed for lax of duty.

If they maintian vigil and maintain law and order, they are again blamed for high handedness! before blaming the police, the party leaders have to be blamed for organizing such stunts! There is simply no excuse for holding a city for ransom and causing so much inconvenience to the public and also the cost involved in maintaining law and order. in my view the govt must charge the congress party for all the additional cost incurred for security!

Look at the plight of "paid" party workers. Leaders enjoy royal detainment with cameras focusing on them and "paid" workers being paid by police latis. This tamasha by congress will not last long. Better they rectify themselves before JDS takes their position of being largest opposition in coming years.
