Mangalore, Oct 8:  A wanted man was killed following a shootout with police at Swarnagiri Layout near Pachchanady on Thursday October 8.

The deceased is Sardar (34), a native of Bijapur district, who was involved in several criminal cases including robbery. Four of his associates, who were with him, have also been arrested.

The arrested are Malik of Chikmagalur, Sanjay of Tumkur, Praveen, a resident of Bangalore, and Shiva Kumar, a resident of Bellary.

They were staying in a rented house at Swarnanagar Layout and were conspiring to kill a businessman as they had obtained the information that the man had a suitcase with Rs 5 crore in it.

Police sources said that the officers acted on a tip-off that the gang of criminals was in the city and traveling in a Swift car (KA 02 MC 2107).

As they were being chased, the car carrying the gangsters hit a police vehicle (KA 19 G 8079). The fugitives began shooting at the police who then returned fire and Sardar was seriously injured.

He was declared dead at the hospital. A pistol and packets of chilli powder were found in his car. Sardar was booked in 21 cases and had escaped from Bijapur jail.

Superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, who was on the spot, said that those arrested were being investigated.

Inspector general of police (western range) Gopal Hosur also visited the spot.

The SP’s special squad headed by sub-inspector Prakash conducted the operation.

Under Narender Modi in Gujarat, DIG of Police Vanjara, was the hero of encounters. But now, after about 3 years he has been arrested for several fake encounter murders. Innocents were gunned down as criminals or terrorists. Keeping that in mind, all encounters are suspect. Even in Mumbai there are several fake encounter cases. Sometimes, police publish an encounter to only cover up their mistakes in "man-handling" suspects in custody.
