Mangalore: DKCA Cup Twenty20 Cricket Tournament Inaugurated

Mangalore, Oct 9: The Twenty20 tournament being organized by Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association (DKCA) went under way at the Nehru Maidan in the city on Thursday October 8 morning. The tournament was symbolically inaugurated by Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, V Ponnuraj, by playing the ball bowled by the district superintendent of police, Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao.
On this occasion, he noted that the game of cricket of late, has witnessed lot of changes to suit the interests of the viewers. "In the recent past, shorter versions of the game have been gaining in popularity. Even though there have been contrasting opinions about the desirability of this trend, there is no doubt that the game, which has a global presence, has the potential to provide entertainment to the masses and enable the players to shape their future. Hence, the importance of the game of cricket can not be overlooked," he remarked.
President of DKCA, Dr Srikant Rai, delivered introductory address. Vice-president, Dr Devadas Rai, secretary, Arunkumar shetty, treasurer, Nitin J Shetty, and several others were present.
A total of 33 matches have been lined up between different teams in the tournament, before the winners of the cup can be decided. On the first day, Atekars Sports Club team, which amassed 135 runs in the allotted 20 overs for the loss of six wickets, defeated City Cricketers, who lost all their wickets for 113 runs. Ummer Raza Farooq, who scored 49 runs, was adjudged the man of the match.
In the second match held in the afternoon, the Someshwar Cricketers team scored a facile win against Ullal Cricket Academy team. Someshwar team mopped up 194 runs for the loss of seven wickets, while Ullal team could get only 143 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Nuashad, who hit 68 runs, got the man of the match award.
