Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

TOI

Oslo, Oct 9: S President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his calls to reduce the world's stockpile of nuclear weapons and working for world peace.

The first African-American to hold the country's highest office, Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize less than a year after he took office with the jury hailing his "extraordinary" diplomatic efforts on the international stage.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee hailed the US president for ``his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.''

The prize worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.4 million) will be handed over in Oslo on December 10.

I completely agree with Gladson’s comments. We should not assume that the Norwegian Nobel Committee has gone out of its mind to award inexperience, we should carefully read and understand the Committee’s announcement in this regard. Initially when I heard the news , I too thought it is pre-matured but later on when I read the declaration by the Committee, I reversed my stance. We should also note here that the reason’s for Obama’s awards are all black points to George Bush.

If President Obama is eligible for Nobel Prize, without accomplishing anything tangible in world peace, then we need to pull a list of names like Pandit Nehru, and other world leaders who had spent their energy for world peace in the past. I am glad that the U.S. President got the award, but it is like adoring with the crown before the coronation.

I agree with the skeptics to some extent that Mr. Barack Obama doesn't deserve to be nominated to the prestigious Nobel Peace prize, which the US President himself agrees saying that he does not "view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments" but rather as a recognition of goals he has set for the United States and the world. "I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize," he said, adding the honour is a "call to action."

It may also be noted that: With Obama's nomination attracting criticism in some quarters for being premature, the Committee rejected this assessment citing progress in multilateralism, disarmament and the fight against climate change as examples of his achievements. "We want to emphasise that he has already brought significant changes," Geir Lundestad, the secretary of the Nobel Committee was quoted as saying. Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland also fended off the criticism at a press conference following the announcement. "If you look at the history of the Peace Prize, we have on many occasions given it to try to enhance what many personalities were trying to do," he said The Committee earlier said, "Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play." Further, it may be noted that Obama assumed Presidency just two weeks before the close of February 1 nomination deadline and was mentioned feebly in speculation while the names of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and an African woman's rights activist were doing the rounds. The US media variedly described the announcement as surprising, bold and even bizarre.

Let us hope that this Nobel Prize may spur America in general and Obama in particular to bring an end to the wars ranging from Middle-East including Arab-Israeli conflict to Afghanistan/Pakistan thus soon heralding peace in long-standing disputes. Also, I hope Barack Obama keeps up his commitment to bring an end to nuclear proliferation and ensure that timely steps are taken for efforts against the climate change:quote"We cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations and in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust endangers more people.

And that's why we've begun to take concrete steps to pursue a world without nuclear weapons: because all nations have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear power, but all nations have the responsibility to demonstrate their peaceful intentions. We cannot accept the growing threat posed by climate change, which could forever damage the world that we pass on to our children, sowing conflict and famine, destroying coastlines and emptying cities."unquote

While everyone including Obama himself it is surprised by this, I think it will be unfair to criticise either the awardee or the jury. Let us all be very clear that Obama has not been awarded for his efforts as US president because, the nomination deadline for the Nobel Peace prize award had met its deadline, barely within 13 days after Obama became president. This means he was nominated based not on his presidential achievements but on the merit of his efforts on multilateralism, diarmament and fight against climate change.

Even in the past Nobel committee has given awards to individuals or groups to enhance what they were trying to do. Obama surely has shown vision and spirit which is 'un-US'. As he himself has said it in his acceptance speech, it is not so much of accomplishments but a call for action. It is not the recognition of his accomplishments but recognition of his vision for the US and the world, a world without nuclea weapons. We have to accept the fact that rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. Obama was seen as a hero even before his election and election was seen as mere ritual to elect him. He assumed power on 19 and the deadline for the Nobel prizes was February 1.

In his own words ' throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honour specific achievement it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. Let's wish him best.

There are several people who take so many years sometimes even their life time to get a Nobel Award. What surprises me that a President or Minister easily walks away with such prestigious award without any efforts. It happens not only for obama but it practically happens in India. So no point in criticising obama.

Hello Friends, Noble Peace prize will arm Obama in his quest to create a new world order by reaching out to Nations that are reluctant to join hands due to power & relegion cum region politics . He has noble  mindset & vision. This Peace award will no doubt spur more active positive role by US to make this world a better place to live & herald a new era in comradeship.

Congratulations! Mr. Obama, President of USA. He deserve this award. Nobel Peace Prize is awarded based on committees recommendations. The NPP Committee President has clarified when questioned by one of the audiances/reporters as to why Mr. Obama awarded this prize. The answer was justified and none had made any comments after that. We must think that this award is by luck and even Mr. Obama never expected this. By winning this award, he will make more good work to the world. He has been encourged by the Nobel committe to do good US policies to the world during his present tenure. In my personal openion Mr. Obama's Peace prize Award is realy commendable. We must always make positive and good comments for such awards. Thank you.

What a Surprise!! Just an announcement of Disarmament..and there is the "Nobel" for not a noble cause..He has to go a long way in bringing real peace and it is not at all possible to Persuade countries like china, Russia , Iran to stop piling these Nuclear weapons. The Nobel committee has created a Doubt in peoples mind by giving this Prestigious award to a New entrant to the Politics with "Lot of Hopes" but almost "Zero acheivements so far"

Obviously this prize is pre-mature for Obama. They should have waited for him to complete his term and judged him by his performance rather than his promise. All the same Mr. Obama's eagerness to create a new world order by reaching out to the Muslim world is commendable. If he can build new bridges and bring about better understanding, people's Islamophobia will disappear and so-called Jehadi terrorism too will evaporate. But the key to all this is achieving man's economic well being and meeting basic needs like food, clothing and shelter. If I cannot pay my daughter's school fees, then what use is world peace? At the moment H. D. Deve Gowda seems like a better candidate, followed closely by Laloo.

Barak Obama has been awarded the Nobel peace prize and is equated to the greats like Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela. The peace prize to the commender in chief whose army has brought death and  destruction  to thousands of innocents in Afaganistan, Pakistan, Iraq, turned a blind eye on the plight of the Palestineans, ignored the suffering of the Sudanese, Somalis. What a pity !

If the reasons for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize as mentioned in the above news report is really true, it shows the arbitrariness or even lack of application of mind in making such decisions. How can ``calls to reduce world's stockpile of N-weapons and working for world peace'' be grounds? And what is the extraordinary work that the new President did barely within 9 months of assuming power? Obviously, the decision is baffling to say the least and unjustified. If the intention was to honour a Black or African-American by conferring the award, there is no quarrel. But the Nobel committee should not give lame and unbelievable reasons as justifications. Surely, the people are not fools to be taken in by such gestures. Of course, nobody cribs about Obama getting the rare honour. It would have been better if it was bestowed after his first term, that too, assuming he really does achieve something memorable.
