Kolkata, Jan 27 (IANS): A woman was arrested here on Monday for allegedly strangulating her two-month-old daughter to death a day after she complained that the girl had been kidnapped, the police said.

The infant's body was recovered from a manhole behind the family's apartment in north east Kolkata's Beliaghata late on Saturday.

The 38-year-old woman -- Sandhya Malo -- had lodged a police complaint that an unidentified youth forcibly entered her second floor flat, made her unconscious and fled with the baby on Sunday. The woman claimed that after she regained consciousness, she could find neither the youth nor her baby.

The police found inconsistencies in the woman's statement and after being subjected to sustained interrogation, she broke down and confessed to have killed the child by strangulating her with leucoplast.

"She claimed she was tired of the baby and hence killed her. Further investigation is on," a senior police officer said.
