Dubai, Oct 12: In a sensational development, South Kanara’s most wanted underworld gangster Bannanje Raja alias Rajendra Kumar alias RK has been detained by Dubai police, said reliable sources.
Following a red alert from Interpol, Dubai police had been hunting for several underworld criminals who have been sheltering in the nation.
Dubai police had released names of several people with underworld connections.
On learning of the arrest of his men, Raja attempted to leave the country as he possesses a Malaysian visa. On the evening of Sunday October 11,2009. Dubai immigration authorities detained him as he was trying to leave the country.
Daijiworld has learnt that Karnataka police had requested Interpol’s help in nabbing several underworld criminals who have been active in the state over the past few years.
There have been regular threats from these gangsters to Mangalore’s top businessmen, especially those in the real estate sector.
Raja’s name has popped up in several attacks on businessmen in Dakshina Kannada. In 2007, he had owned responsibility for the murder of real estate businessman Subba Rao.
Though many of the accused in the case were arrested, Raja, who is thought to be the mastermind behind the murder, remained elusive and stayed in Dubai and Malaysia.
Karnataka police have requested Dubai authorities to hand him over to their jurisdiction. Dubai has not made an official announcement about Raja’s arrest though several Indian television channels are flashing the news of the arrest.
