Mangalore: Goodu Deepa Contests in City, Udupi

Mangalore, Oct 13: Organizer of the programme Kadri Navaneet Shetty informed, that the tenth annual ‘Goodu Deepa Pantha (contest)' being organized by 'Namma Kudla' team, will be held in the premises of Kudroli Lord Gokarnananatha Temple from 4 pm onwards on Friday October 16. He was addressing a press conference here on Monday October 12.

The contest will be held in three different categaries i.e., traditional, modern and unique models. The Goodu Deepas which stand first and second, will get gold medals, while those which succeed in getting the appreciation of the judges will get consolation prizes, Shetty explained.

Those willing to take part in the contest may register their names and choose their categories before 4 am on October 16 at the said venue. The raw materials like bulbs, holders, wire and any other things needed for the Goodu Deepas should be brought by the contestants themselves, he said.

At the valedictory ceremony of the contest to be held that night at 8 pm, former union minister B Janardan Poojary, Akhila Bharat Billava Federation president Jaya C Suvarna, Karnataka Bank managing director P Jayaram Bhat, small screen artiste Nanjundi and Daijiworld Media managing director Walter Nandalike will be participating. Prizes to the winners will be distributed on this occasion, revealed Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli.

He also divulged that 'Namma Tuluver' award will be conferred on entrepreneur A J Shetty, while veteran artiste Machchendranath Pandeshwar will be handed over the 'Namma Kudla - 2009' award on this occasion. Raghavendra Kulur will also be honoured at the venue, he revealed.

Director Harish Karkera, producers Mohan Karkera and Leelaksha Karkera were present at the press conference.

In the meanwhile, a release from Srikrishna Mutt Udupi said that Goodu Deepa contest is being organized at the Mutt on the occasion of Laksha Deepotsava. Those interested in entering the contest, have to submit any model of the traditional type Goodu Deepas at the office of Mutt between 10 am on October 17 and 3 pm on October 18. Winners will be given attractive prizes and all the Goodu Deepas will be displayed at the Rajangan, it said.
