Udupi, Feb 1: Students of MGM College turned cooks. They were busy plating up Indian delicacies such as vada pav, holige, jaggery sweets and sherbets, much to the delight of their college mates. The unique sight was seen at ‘Namma Café’ set up at MGM College grounds on Saturday, February 1.

Namma Café is an effort by the MGM College student council. The main aim was to attract more students to the College sports day.

MGM College student council president Shreyas told media that every year during sports day, only participants were seen on the ground with their friends. Sports day was a holiday for other students. The council wanted to change the scenario and wanted more audience to witness the sports events and cheer participants. Hence, they came up with the concept of Namma Café and also set up a selfie corner.

As star attractions, actor Raj B Shetty of ‘Ondu Motteya Kathe' fame and cheer boy Chethu, a famous social media celebrity were invited.

The plan by the council worked. Unlike earlier years, where only around 200 students attended, this year saw a massive crowd of over 1,000 students.

Local delicacies such as ‘Bonda sarbath’, ‘Chakuli Thove’, ‘Thuppa Holige’, watermelon juice served in its own shell, jaggery candy, panipuri, vada pav, soft drinks, ice creams and fried rice were sold. A competition for best food sellers was also organized. All food items were priced Rs 20 and below except fried rice which cost Rs 40.

The council collected donations from students for the events. The 13 member council organises many events like ‘Spectrum’- cultural event, sports day and other social welfare events every year.

A selfie competition was also announced. “We did not think about profit and loss. We thought about spreading cheer on sports day on the ground. All lecturers have supported us," Shreyas said.
