Bengaluru: MP Anantkumar Hegde calls Mahatma Gandhi's freedom struggle a 'drama', Congress retorts

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 2: Stirring yet another controversy, BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde has attacked Mahatma Gandhi, calling his non-violent freedom struggle a 'drama' and an 'adjustment' fight against the British.

Addressing a public programme, Hegde alleged that the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi was 'staged' with the 'consent and support' of the British.

News18 quoted the MP as saying, "None of these so-called leaders were beaten by the police with batons even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an 'adjustment' freedom struggle."

Terming Gandhi’s hunger strikes and satyagraha a 'drama', he said, "These Congress people keep saying that we got independence because of the fast unto death or satyagraha. That is not true. The British did not leave India because of satyagraha."

He also denied the role of RSS in Gandhi’s assassination.

However, the state BJP did not endorse Hegde's statement. State BJP spokesperson G Madhusudhan said that the RSS respects Mahatma Gandhi and will not support such 'cheap' remarks.

'No need to learn from people who worship Godse'

Retorting to Hegde's remarks about the Mahatma, former chief minister Siddaramaiah said, "There is no need to learn lessons on patriotism from people who worship Godse (Gandhi's killer)."

Siddaramaiah further said, "Anantakumar Hegde does not know the basics of freedom struggle. If there is any country in this world that has secured independence from colonial rule through non-violence, it is India.

"What more can people who revere Godse and Savarkar speak about? How will they accept Mahatma Gandhi? Anantakumar Hegde is still young. He does not know what is independence. So he is blabbering whatever comes to his mind. There is no need for people to learn about patriotism from him," he said.

KPCC media division chief V S Ugrappa also slammed Hegde, saying that the MP ought to be 'admitted to mental hospital'.

"By saying that Gandhiji is not a freedom fighter Hegde has given an arrogant and mentally unstable statement. Hegde, who had earlier given a statement insulting Dr B R Ambedkar, has now spoken on Mahatma Gandhi like a mentally deranged person.

"Anantakumar might have lost his mental balance. If the BJP are concerned about him, he should be treated immediately in Nimhans or any other hospital where they treat mentally-ill patients. In addition, let BJP clarify its stand on the statement given by Hegde on Gandhiji," he said.

"If the government in the state and at the center is alive, they should have sent MP Anantkumar Hegde to prison by now for making derogatory remarks against the Constitution and democracy. Because of the non-violence and Satyagraha mode of independence struggle led by Mahatma Gandhiji, India has got a very respectable position in the world today. By insulting such a great person, Hegde has insulted whole of India," he added.

"In the independence struggle, RSS was against Gandhiji. Today BJP leaders are speaking in the same way. BJP leaders are the real traitors of India. They are against democracy and Constitution of this country. The public of India is noticing the recklessness of BJP and the day is not far when the people of this country will teach a fitting lesson to the party.

"While the Congress party believes in the ideals of Mahatma Gandhiji, BJP proposes the ideals of Nathuram Godse. BJP president of West Bengal says that they will bludgeon those who speak against CAA like dogs. The BJP minister of Uttar Pradesh says that they will shoot anyone who speaks against the prime minister, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh or the CAA. Union finance minister for state, our state ministers R Ashok and C T Ravi say that those who oppose CAA should be shot mercilessly. MLA Somashekhar Reddy and MP of Bengaluru South Lok Sabha constituency also speak in the same manner," he said.

Former Karnataka minister and Congress MLA Priyank Kharge said, "Hegde is no longer a minister. He is out of circulation. He is now trying to impress Prime Minister Modi by talking nonsense."

What else can we expect from a leader of a party full of hypocrites. Their leaders from the top itself contradict with each other. They are actually taking the people for a ride and actually make fool of us.

If the party is not hypocrite and honest, instead of disowning the statements, throw them out. They have chief ministers and ministers openly speak in condoning manners and incite violence, but when it comes to PM he acts as if nothing happened and they are all clean as milk.

These guys are openly insulting freedom fighters especially Father of Nation and yet no action against them. Why no sedation cases on such haters for insulting father of nation??? They got this courage to speak such non sense openly coz till today secular forces and true Indians are silent and didn't take any effort when these Hindutva forces were spreading their venom secretly. Today they have grown to such an extent that they openly insult anybody and twist history as per their norms. If we still sleep then these goons will destroy entire India. There will never remain any peace in India. Work hard to stop this venom from spreading.

He has no self respect and how can he respect others. This shows how much respect he has toward our homeland and constitution. ‘Deenabandhu’C.F.Andrews, ‘Utkal Gourav’ Madhusudan Das, J.C Kumarappa, Brahmabandhab Upadhyay, George Joseph, Joachim & Violet Alva, H.C Mukherjee, A.J John, Joseph Baptista, Lambert Mascarenhas

M.V.Kamath, a columnist, acknowledges that several Christians took part in the freedom movement and mentions the names of Cyprian Alvares, Joachim Alva, Marcel A. M. D’Souza as Christian freedom fighters. He says: “It is necessary to state that many Roman Catholics I personally know of were very much in the freedom movement and national mainstream”.

Madhu Sudhan Das (1848-1934, popularly known as ‘Utkal Gourab’), a well-known leader from the Christian community in Orissa.

Kali Charan Banerjee (1847-1907), a Bengali Christian and a fine orator, regularly addressed the annual sessions of the Congress in moulding the policy of National Movement.

J.C.Kumarappa (original name John Jesudason Cornelius, 1892-1960) was a veteran Congress leader. . On 9 May 1929 he met Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati ashram and that resulted in their becoming close associates. He was a strong supporter of Satyagraha, and encouraged Christian participation in the national movement. Before Mahatma Gandhi started off the Dandy March in 1931, he encouraged Kumarappa to write regularly for his weekly Young India and informed him that he would be its editor after his imprisonment. Thus Kumarappa became editor of Young India and his fiery writings gave him one and a half years of rigorous imprisonment in 1931. Since he was also a prominent figure in Congress affairs, he was given a chance to be a member of the All India Congress Working Committee in place of Jay Prakash Narayan in 1947. But he rejected the offer in spite of Gandhi’s persuasion.

Paul Ramasamy (b.1906) was another important Christian who took part in the freedom struggle. In 1930 he joined the freedom movement during the Salt satyagraha days. He picketed the Bishop Herber College, Thiruchirappalli. He was arrested and sentenced to six month

I dont understand what this 'motor mouth' MP Hegde rumbles and, creates controversies each time he opens his mouth. In fact we have many such in BJP circles that includes Kalladka Bhatta. The main reason for such outbursts is, there is no capable leaders in the Cong/JDS opposition to counter such people. The leaders who are 'oldies' have been comprehensively been voted out and rejected by people. To add to that , due to their ' doings' and senseless press conferences they are a object of ridicule. Any counter argument or statements by these Cong/JDS leaders are not taken seriously and nobody cares. The people have given up as DK/Mluru is now a 'BJP Badrakote'.
Congress should now assume it as another 'wake up ' call for the parties to change its leadership and bring in young dynamic leaders in the forefront. If not we all are compelled to live with this absurdity. Its sad though.

Its 7 years now and there has been NO action. Bhat is openly challenging this Sachiva and his party cadres to have him arrested. Bhats fiery speeches every month since the past 7 years.

I have heard the complete speech of Mr. Hegde. It is a joy to listen to the words from a man of wisdom.
He never mentioned the name 'Gandhi' in his speech. He said that Congress wanted to portray that our Independence was a result of non-violent protests. But the fact is that British left India because they were exhausted by WWII and have seen the violent protests raising in India.
If it was only Sathyagrahas, they would have never left India. Let us accept the facts, with due respect for Gandhi.

IF political people say Gandhiji has not done anything, then they are the real anti-nationals, and this hedge belongs to this group.
Please ignore this dysentery mouth, nothing good can he do nor speak,
I am sure our youth and people will befitting reply through their votes.

So it is the case with his partymen who enjoying the freedom given to them on a platter by the leaders of the freedom struggle. Its time the electorate of Delhi give him a fitting reply by showing his party its rightful place. Ananth Kumar's mouth is like a open grave - only filth comes out of it.

Every Indian has seen the real images of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Ambedkar, Bose during and after the independence struggle. There are millions still alive today who marched, starved and fought British peacefully along with these leaders. There could be lakhs more who served the purpose of getting independence from British.

Yes, they did not. Says this guy, who is a BJP MP.

But there were also a few, who were hiding behind the British. Today they preach Indians what patriotism is. A person who got pension from British for their service, gets added the name Veer.
So, it is time to realize, truth no longer is truth. It is just a illusion.
