Mangalore: Thieves Break into Temple and Church in Ullal

Mangalore, Oct 15: The thieves broke into a church and a temple located within the jurisdiction of Ullal police station here, and ransacked the furniture and other things found inside.

After midnight on Wednesday October 14, the thieves broke open the doors of Kuttar Rajarajeshwari temple and Chembugudde church. The thieves, after entering the Bishop Sergeant Memorial Church of Chembugudde, hurriedly searched for money and valuables. They broke open a cupboard found inside the church and sifted through the contents therein, to see whether cash was kept there. The devotees, who congregated at the church premises in the early morning, after knowing about the incident, believed that it was another incident in the series of church attacks.

The gang of thieves also entered Rajarajeshwari temple nearby, at midnight on Wednesday, by breaking open its door. As they were groping for cash and valuables in the dark, the priest of the temple, who was sleeping there, was woken up by the sound. He immediately raised an alarm. As the beat policemen rushed to the spot, the thieves decamped. The policemen thereafter utilized the services of the sniffer dogs, which, after visiting the church premises, came to the temple, indicating that the same gang was involved in both the incidents.

In a swift operation, two suspects were taken by the policemen into custody. It may be recalled that the thieves had recently entered the same temple and had taken away cash and valuables worth Rs 1.2 lac. Inspector Linappa Poojary and sub-inspector Saifulla visited the spot. They are guiding the investigations.
