Intelligence Reports Warn of Imminent Attacks: PM

NEW DELHI, Oct 20 (PTI): Noting that both state and non-state actors are engaged in the "business" of terrorism, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said  regular Intelligence reports had warned of "imminent attacks" in the country and security forces needed to be prepared to meet any challenge.

Addressing the top commanders of three Services here, he also said that the situation in India's immediate neighbourhood had worsened, apparently referring to the developments in Pakistan which he did not spell out.

He referred to last year's Mumbai attacks and the terror strike at the Indian embassy in Kabul earlier this month, which he said was "yet another grim reminder of the forces" that India is pitted against.

"There are both state and non-state actors involved in the business of terrorism. India is a democracy and an open society and is, therefore, sometimes highly vulnerable," Singh said.

He pointed out that there has been no major terrorist attack in India since the 'horrific' Mumbai attacks but said "there are regular Intelligence reports of imminent attacks in the country. This is a matter of deep concern and there is no room for complacency".

Instability and growing tensions in our neighbourhood should not be taken lightly. We must remain vigilant on all possibile calamities and should safeguard not only our frontiers but also our neighbourhood backyards with utmost caution.

Fortunately, we have been blessed with some of the best leaders who know their roles in good times as well as in difficult times. How we tackled the Mumbai terrorist attacks with patience, tolerance and perseverence has created the admiration of the peaceloving world. Peace and stability in our neighbourhood is our own peace and stability as well. May God help all of us at all times.

Praveen, had it been ok that the something untoward happens and then the PM says sorry. I guess this is happening for the first time that we are being fore-warned. As citizens even we are responsible for our own well-being. Stop being sarcastic and do whatever you can to improve your own well-being.

Rightly said Ravindranath Shetty, Mangalore/Sharjah. We must have a positive approach and only then we can resolve issues as such. People in India should change the way they look at certain issues, and develope reasoning as to judge by themself whats right and wrong. There is nothing we can loose by being Optimistic, where as the gain from being Pesimistic is not greater than Zero.

We citizens of the country should play a bit of our role in controlling Internal & External Terrorism. The Office Bearers of the Assn of all the Apartment building should be extra alert on all the Rent Occupants. The Assn should investigate the inside of those flats in the name of checking the Bathroom & Kitchen Fixtures in their flat. The Assn should keep a record of the occupation, work place contact no native place & the local guardian of those tenants.

The Assn should also inform the Police/Security if they notice any suspicious movement of strangers or any unattended bags or boxes in their locality. We are passing through a bad phase & any major attack will have adverse effect on our economy.

Please remember, terrorists have no religion and it is their business which is well organised & they are illegally swindling money in the name of religion from all over the world. Religion does not teach looting, raping & killing of innocent men, women & children. They should be totally condemned by all citizens of India irrespective of religion, region or caste. Jai Hind!

The reason why we are far behind compared to some developed nation is that, there are very few positive thinkers like Ravindranath Shetty and plenty of negative thinkers like Praveen Bangera.

DEAR HENRY MISQUITH, EACH & EVERY COMMON MAN KNOWS ABOUT IT. WE ARE WATCHING WHAT IS HAPPENNING IN THE WORLD. ANNOUNCING THE REPORTS IS NOT AN ANSWER. THEY HAVE TO IMPLEMENT IT WITH WAR FOOTING. FIRST SEAL OUR BORDERS. FLUSH OUT ILLEGAL BANGLADESHIS. GIVE SOPHISTICATED WEAPONS TO OUR DEFENCE FORCE. GIVE THEM RIGHTS TO SHOOTOUT TERRORISTS. IN INDIA EVERYBODY TELLS BUT NOBODY IMPLEMENT IT. WE HAVE SEEN IN MUMABI ATTACK. STILL CENTRAL GOVT. DID NOT WAKE UP. ALL FOR THE SAKE OF VOTE BANK. JAI HO INDIA.

The security and integrety of our country is far most the responsibility of every citizen. Its not just limited to the Prime Minister , his cabinet and the defense and paramilitary forces. As a responsible citizen we must be vigilant and must be awake in our sleeps. Thats the message our PM has given to the nation. He could have passed on this information to concerned dept and kept quiet. But he alerted and warned the citizens of India. If each and every citizen is dutiful and sense the threat, I am sure no outside or inside terror attack would take place. Lets not take this threat as light and silly but more seriously before many a innocent lives are lost. Dont just comment as critic. But please see out PM's motive and intentions. Its always easy to criticise sitting in the opposition. Lets all be dutiful to our country. Protection of our boundaries are the duty of every Indian citizen.

Dear Praveen, by informing the nation about intelligent report our hon'ble PM is advising all citizens to be alert and be responsible and inform the authorities of any suspicious activities observed. Let us see positivity in his speech. Our PM is a world renowned elder statesman, intellect and non controversial (non)politician.

I agree with Henry Misquith, MANGALORE/BAHRAIN. With "Terror Central" Pakistan next door and many anti-national elements in India who are readily willing to aid Pakistan, India needs to be EXTRA VIGILENT.

Thank you Mr. PM for warning the nation. You are telling the nation that "apna apna salaamati khudh kar lo. Kyun Ki yeh sarkar Kuch nahi kar Sakhthi. However thank you once more taking a anticipatory bail on terror by telling the nation that there will be imminent strikes. We know that most of the time Mumbai will be targeted, followed by Delhi, and Bangalore.

However we indians will forget all these incidents in 1 or 2 months and will indulge in petty things like relegion, language etc for years. Therefore, Mr. PM, dont worry you sir. Yeh sab mamooli ho gayaa hain indians ke liye aur apne aap ko indian kahene waalon ko. Jai Ho.
